Didn’t almost all these reporters say/walk back recently they don’t know what’s true and what we are up to including that early offseason leak of no money? So we have no idea what the basis for “nothing’s changed” means. Also we’re to believe these guys at their words and they totally have sources when they didn’t even get the news out Morrow had surgery until over 1 month after it happened.

Man, horsefeathers the Ricketts if this doesn't happen.

Tom Ricketts puts a friendly public face to ownership that makes it appear like the team is being run by a baseball-first family business, but the reality is they are in it for the money (which they unfortunately spend on some very questionable causes). What happened to the extra money they were supposedly saving away during the rebuild for future payroll? Has that already been spent on hotels and restaurants that nobody asked for?

Ownership crying poor, albeit indirectly through the media, really strikes me the wrong way. They are monetizing everything and consistently raising ticket and concession prices, yet there is no way that payroll increases have kept up with their increased revenue. The money is there. They just want to keep it for themselves.

So yes, I agree, this is the time to spend a little extra money, and I will be upset if all the rumors end up being true and the Cubs never even gave themselves a chance to sign Harper.

According to this, PTR has $900 million in net worth. I think maybe I'd think twice before committing 1/3 of my net worth to something. That doesn't mean it's not worth it to sign Harper but handing out the largest contract ever is not something any owner is going to do lightly.

A) Celebrity net worth is dumb

B) Tom accounts for maybe 1/5 of the ownership group that is the entire family.

C) The team can easily afford to pay Harper.

but Bryce signing here would really shock a whole bunch of people.

Which would be the bigger shock: Bryce signing with the Cubs or Baines making the HOF?

Yeah, the family net worth is, I think, something like $5 billion. They are scum.

It is not like any money paid to Bryce Harper has to immediately come out of the Ricketts’ pockets, it is very safe to assume it will come from the future profits of the club. The net worth of the Ricketts family will continue to grow regardless of the (within reason) contract that Bryce Harper gets.

It's funny that everyone just assumes the Cubs are some cash cow for the Ricketts family that throws off tons of cash on a yearly basis directly into their pockets. It would be very surprising if that was even remotely the reality. With that said, sign Harper.

I was in Wrigleyville over the weekend and it really hit me what a monster Ricketts has created that is going to be needed to be continually fed with people. While there is much there that can be Cubs independent and the Cubs are a tourist attraction in themselves so their floor attendance is going to be higher than the average team I still get the impression that a bad team would be a nightmare financially. I guess all that is to say - sign Harper.

They're making money off of the team. horsefeathers their profit margin. When it costs so damn much to go to the games and the entire area is essentially being turned into a bro and yuppie Disney World for alcoholics, they better pay out when opportunities like this come along.

I remember when the cheap and evil Ricketts paid $600 million for the Wrigley renovations out of their pockets instead of using public money. I also remember when the Cubs had the highest payroll in the NL last season. Go root for the Reds if you think the Cubs are cheap.

I'll bite: much do you think the Cubs make each year?

More than Bryce Harper's potential yearly salary.

How generous of them to pay for the renovation of their own building instead of their failed attempt to secure public money for it.

How much of a kiss-ass to the rich do you have to be to believe that a $600 million real estate development investment was some kind of altruism.

They didn't choose not to use public money. They begged for it and didn't get it, and instead they used their own money *because they knew they would turn a profit on the development*.

There's not a terrible coach, abusive player, or scumbag billionaire that this guy won't side with.

So much this. They're nothing more than businessmen trying to make a buck and if they didn't think they could by making the investment, they wouldn't have. The y were just trying to further maximize profits by sucking some public money.
