I don't hate Schwarber at the top, but I still think Zobrist would be better there.

Same. I think Joe really values Zobrist's ability to make contact in big spots, which is probably why he's not 1.

I'd put Zobrist-Schwarber-Bryant-Rizzo 1-4 and bat the pitcher 8th (that part sounds like it'll happen, which I'm jazzed for).

This is probably true in a vacuum, but you have to consider that Bryant hitting 2nd with Rizzo hitting 3rd is probably better than the inverse, and Rizzo/Zobrist hitting 3/4 is definitely better than back to back LH with Rizzo/Schwarber.

The moral of the story is there's a clear Top 4 hitters in the lineup. Working backwards from where you want the best of those guys hitting, you put Schwarber 1st because Bryant should be 2nd and if Bryant should be 2nd then Rizzo needs to be 3rd, and if Rizzo needs to be 3rd then Schwarber needs to lead off.

So it's

Schwarber

Bryant

Rizzo

Zobrist

Russell

Contreras/Montero (Montero hitting down a spot)

Heyward/Baez

Pitcher

Almora/Jay

If we're lucky, sometimes we'll get Javy at 2nd, Zobrist in RF and (fixed) Heyward in CF for the mega offense lineup

Zobrist had a .401 OBP against LHP last year so guessing its

Zobrist (LF) (.856 OPS against LHP)

Bryant (1.060 OPS against LHP)

Rizzo (.832 OPS against LHP)

Russell (.801 OPS against LHP)

Contreras (.854 ops against LHP)

Baez (.850 OPS against LHP)

Heyward (.586 ops against LHP but he gloves in so many runs)

Almora (.827 ops against LHP in 43 PA)

Pitcher

Maybe flip Russell and Contreras and Almora and Heyward (though lol that's tough on Heyward)

So basically you don't want to use a LHP against us.

Almora in the 9 spot would be my guess. I think Heyward will get the respect nod to hit in front of Javy, too. Might be a good way for Javy to learn to lay off pitches out of the zone.

Adding a fixed Heyward and a whole season of Schwarbs to a 103 win team is almost unfair.

i mean you did overlook the losing career-year fowler (in that statement) but i think heyward's bounceback will cover for that.

javy actually hits well against lefties (he also only had an 18% k rate vs them to go with an 8% walk rate) and heyward prob won't. i don't really see any respect nod thing happening.

i don't disagree with most of the logic here but i also don't think schwarber is going to sit vs lefties as a rule. i think when he gets days off, it will be vs tough lefties, but i don't think he's going to be in a platoon.

Yeah I think Heyward and Schwarber will split time vs LHP, with Zobrist or Jay (neutral splits, iirc) in LF/RF most of the time vs LHP, unless one proves to be much better or awful vs LHP.

I agree with you, and I think this is also a good illustration of how the new way of roster construction can't be easily simplified to even platoon lineups. Even if you eliminate CF and C as standalone platoons that don't impact anyone else, you still have 60+ games where guys are just getting days off, plus any 15+ day DL stints, doubleheaders, etc. There are 9 guys that deserve to start in any given lineup configuration, which means it's much less likely there's someone that doesn't deserve to start given an extended number of starts.

Assuming the Almora/Jay platoon can match Heyward's 2016 output (1.6 WAR), we'd just need Heyward to hit his average WAR over the last three years (4.2 WAR) to come close to matching Fowler's 4.7. I assume a full season of Schwarb dongs can more more than make up any difference.
