I'm saying that Dunn is sorta what he is right now, and that's fine. We don't need him to be an MVP. And maybe he ends up hitting for better average (bonus!) but he doesn't need to to be productive

That statline through your first 162 games doesnt scare me at all. First 162 games bookended with a terrible injury in the middle that took a whole year of ABs away from him.

I legit think Schwarber would have been hitting significantly better had he not missed an entire season of ABs after only a little over 2 months of seeing MLB pitching for the first time.

He might struggle more this season but I think you are going to see a guy that rakes come mid 2018 to 2019 as he develops.

He did, for whatever its worth, just pull his OPS above .700 today too

In terms of arbitrary stat lines, it'll be nice to see him pull that average over the Mendoza line. Let him work the rest of it out over the rest of the season.

Saw this in a Dave Cameron FG chat:

JHey: Is it too early to say Kyle Schwarber may not be terrible in the OF? 6.4UZR/150….so he is just average or just below average at worst?

12:09

Dave Cameron: All of his positive UZR is based on throwing.

Is that necessarily a bad thing that all his defensive value is based on throwing? It still means that he is playing the position as a whole slightly above average right? Or am I completely misunderstanding UZR?

If that's true, I would assume that throwing strength and accuracy are fairly consistent attributes although there is certainly some luck involved.

Schwarber is one of Cameron's blind spots, everything he ever says about him is going to be through the most pessimistic lens possible even if it actually makes him look ridiculous. Oh no, Schwarber has an above average arm and is basically average with the glove, how terrible.

lol... the question even asks if he is "just average or just below average."

"No, he's only average without his positive arm."

Patiently waiting for the next hot take of "Sure he's an average LF, but he'd be awful at short."

he's basically soriano in the field which is funny

Schwarber has never hopped while catching a routine fly ball.

Hahah I forgot about that controversy

Didn't Soriano actually turn himself into a pretty decent fielder after Sveum and co came in and actually, you know, started coaching him to play the position?

nah not really. had a positive fielding year one year but prob just the random variance of defensive metrics

was better in 07 and 08

I loved it when people thought they could just run on him since he was a new OF and he'd just unload at three-quarters to nail guys at the plate.

I just ventured over to Cards Talk out of sheer boredom, and there is a 103 page thread dedicated to Kyle at the very top of the forum. 103 pages! Even though he is having a tough year, hasn't he single handedly beat the Cards at least twice this year?

He's up to a 100 wRC+ and a .330 wOBA, and should be right around 100 on an OPS+ so he'll end up the year an almost exactly average major league hitter in 2017, after what looked like what might be a lost season.

Good for him.

The Thing is a DH. I think yesterday’s error punctuated the need for him to be moved sooner rather than later. Happ becomes the everyday LF next year.

nah, it was a bad play, but nothing worse than some other "great" left fielders have made.

He'll be a DH on the downhill side of his career, but don't write him off on one play. He got a little lazy. My guess is it will motivate him.
