I felt like Schwarber would struggle against Kluber, and thought starting Coghlan was pointless. Soler hasn't done anything of note since before September.

I get that I went against the popular sentiment on the first one, but the other two aren't particularly thin limbs to climb out on.

Who would you play over Soler tonight and why? Especially knowing what we know about Tomlins splits and the wind?

Assuming this is a sincere question, I would put Heyward out there because I think we have enough offense on hand to win the game, especially against Tomlin, and I'd be more concerned with making sure we had a sure handed OF out there with the wind being a factor on fly balls.

Fair enough. I disagree but understand the sentiment

Watching the great 'post-Stubhub' ticket price drop with great interest....

What do you mean by this?

Stubhub stops selling tickets 6 hours before gametime, which causes a bunch of unsold tickets to flood into the market, and people usually panic and the prices start dropping.

There are a lot of scams on craigslist but saw quite a few geniunine looking posts selling tickets for well under 1k each, some in the 500-600 range for actual seats.

Ah, I was wondering where you were seeing the tickets. I can imagine!

Is it wrong that I worry about guys trying to elevate the ball to the point where it screws up their approach?

Yes, it's wrong. They're already all trying to dong as it is. Basically the whole lineup is looking to elevate the ball in every single at bat.

https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/statcast_search?hfPT=&hfZ=&hfGT=R%7C&hfPR=&hfAB=&stadium=&hfBBT=1%7C2%7C3%7C&hfBBL=&hfC=&season=2016&player_type=batter&hfOuts=&pitcher_throws=&batter_stands=&start_speed_gt=&start_speed_lt=&perceived_speed_gt=&perceived_speed_lt=&spin_rate_gt=&spin_rate_lt=&exit_velocity_gt=&exit_velocity_lt=&launch_angle_gt=&launch_angle_lt=&distance_gt=&distance_lt=&batted_ball_angle_gt=&batted_ball_angle_lt=&game_date_gt=&game_date_lt=&team=&position=&hfRO=&home_road=&hfInn=&min_pitches=0&min_results=0&group_by=team&sort_col=launch_angle&player_event_sort=start_speed&sort_order=desc&min_abs=0&xba_gt=&xba_lt=&px1=&px2=&pz1=&pz2=&ss_gt=&ss_lt=&is_barrel=#results

They don't have to change their approach to do so. That already is their approach. The only guys who aren't trying to dong every time already are Dex, Zobrist, and Willy. I don't see those guys trying to hit the ball 500 feet. Maybe Willson.

I should expand on this. I've got an article on Willson that I started working on that's sitting in the hopper. (I'll try to get it done tomorrow, fwiw.) And it's about his approach. But, I've also looked into all the other Cubs, too. Basically, the article is going to show why Willson is going to be a BABIP freak. A lot of it has to do with his approach. He's a line drive hitter, with a good approach. Zobrist and Fowler fall into that category, too. But they're not quite as impressive at it as Willson.

Anyway, all the other Cubs in the lineup tonight are swinging for the fences. They have high launch angles on their balls in the air. They are trying to hit home runs. Where they are good, though, is that the standard deviations on the balls they hit are relatively low, especially for guys that are hitting balls at those launch angles. So a guy like Randal Grichuk has a similar average launch angle, but his standard deviation is much higher. He's hitting a lot of pop-ups and making a lot of other weak contact. He's selling out for power. And he's not as consistent with how he hits the ball. We have a bunch of home run hitters swinging for the fences, but they don't get fooled as much. They are consistent with their approach. Their balls in play are closer, on average, to where they want them to be.

What that means for tonight, I think, would be that they don't need to change their approaches. They already are trying to elevate the ball. And they do so without selling out. So if that is already their mindset, how would this change things? They would just be trying to do what they do every other game.

Santana in LF after only playing 4 innings in the outfield his professional career is really gonna be a treat

There's a good chance it'll be hilarious, but Francona is smart to put him out there. The benefit of his bat outweighs the likelihood that this is a close game decided by the quality of the Indians LF.

Gotcha; makes sense.

No way in hell that'd real

There are a lot like that (well not $200 but closer to 500-600)

I've been in the shoes before of having to dump tickets to a high demand game. I bought tickets to the Rockies WS back in 07 to sell them. I denied offers of 4k for 4 tickets (had a combined face of 1k) because i saw similar seats selling for 6k. Finally the prices plunged and I just wanted to get rid of them. Ended up selling for $2500. Some people start panicking when game time approaches and just want to get whatever they can for them.

I agree the $199 for 1 SRO ticket is probably fake but I think you can get in the door for $500 if you are smart.

I love that I can come to this board and see all the opinions of what moves are good or bad, and who should play... and of course throw out my own opinions every once and a while... but I'm all out of opinions now... it's time to just win three games, and Joe and company can do whatever they think is best to do so... I think they've made some mistakes in the playoffs, but they've learned from them and won't make them again.

It's a good day to be a Cubs fan :D

I am dumb, how does one be "smart"

Speaking of standard deviation on balls in play. Would anyone care to take a guess at which Cub has the highest standard deviation of launch angles on his balls in play?

Heyward

Bingo. He sucks at everything.

The Cubbies are playing in a World Series game at Wrigley frickin field tonight! I couldn't care less about anything else right now. The next 4 hours cannot come fast enough!

Plus it will be that much closer to your final install date, so - as Carl in "Caddyshack" would say - you have that going for you.

Meanwhile, those of us who work on the West Coast get screwed out of seeing the first hour of the game. And in downtown Seattle, people are dressed for Seahawks Blue Friday, and a lot of them specially geared up in honor of Halloween. Don't they understand the CUBS are in the World Series??!

Interesting thing about Tomlin. He had a terrible August and temporarily got booted from the rotation until the Salazar injury put him back in. During that brief time in the pen, he worked with the Indians coaches on a couple of specific adjustments to his pitching. Since he was put back into the rotation, he's had 6 starts, pitching 36.1 innings and allowing just 8 ER (1.98 ERA). He attributes his success to the adjustments made.

But I don't think a lot of that will matter with the donging conditions in the air tonight.

Joe needs to stop trying to make Jorge Soler happen, because it's not going to happen.

Well, after LaStella went home to pout, maybe Maddon had to find a new target for an inexplicable man-crush.

Oh, that's not fair. He did do well this year. Is there a thread here I can read about that whole LaStella AWOL business?

Do you think my wife would notice $1,000 missing from our checking account?

Edit: Also me not coming home tonight?

there's probably a greater than 50/50 chance that she forgets you exist for the better part of most days

but she'll notice the scratch being zapped within a few seconds
