anyone have any theories as to why we haven't seen the crazy crowds around wrigley that we saw in 03? it's not like those people were out on sheffield and waveland just to ballhawk, and they obviously couldn't see horsefeathers.

Security concerns would be part of it. Doubt they want thousands of people standing in the streets outside the ballpark loitering in one spot.

The games at Wrigley are on the weekend, so a lot of folks are going to be at the bars drinking (which presumably have expanded some since 2003). Wrigley also has a couple thousand more seats/thousand. Can't drink in the street.

I think there's also probably a few less diehard national fans wanting to travel in just to stand near the park since there's no WGN America games anymore (and that network has greatly declined in popularity since the 90s).

The construction has be limiting people outside the ballpark too. There just isn't much open space for people to congregate.

This is good to know. I was planning on trying to make the trip to Chicago next weekend and just hang around wrigleyville during the games.

Prediction: 0-0 in the bottom of the 9th 2 out; Kershaw has a 120 pitch perfecto going as he throws the 3-2 pitch to Chris Coghlan, then immediately collapses into a heap of exhaustion, allowing Seal Boy's weak comebacker to get through for a hit. Enter Kenley Jansen. Enter pinch hitter Jason Heyward, who rockets the 1st pitch he sees onto Waveland. Out of habit, J-Hey begins his woeful trudge back to the dugout as the crowd erupts, and his team mates have to direct him around the bases.

You lost me at "Kershaw has 120 pitches"

Kershaw won't get 120 pitches

drove up from champaign in 03 w/ a few other guys and watched game 7 at murphys/in the street. there were a bunch of mounted police and some in riot gear, but the crowd was pretty subdued afterwards of cousre. murphy's went freaking crazy for wood's homerun. the highlight of my evening was taking some pics on my disposable camera w/ some riot cops and w/ this one dude who was decked out in a cubs outfit covered in goofy laser lighting. i think he was spotted on tv a few times during the series.

that one hurt, but they hurt more when you're younger. i'm ready to celebrate this one. let's go cubs!!!

also, i started lurking here in 2002 but my brain might not be remembering that correctly. did this place exist in 2002? i think it was after i posted a question on cubs.com about luis montanez and got no reply. there was a prospect ranking list on nsbb that included dudes like blasko/haggerty/sisco/guzman....

We started spring 2004.

I did post on Cubs.com before that as sanclementefan, though.

The day off is good so guys can get some rest

Forget about the players, I need rest after those last 3 nights.

Right, such a relief to be sitting on a couple of big wins too. So happy that I can relax tonight and get some sleep. That much Xanax can't be good for a body.

Yeah, I abandoned Cubs.com for NSBB after taking a few days away from all things sports following the 2003 NLCS.

I decided to join/post after I saw the news of Fred's passing, and more than that, the stories you guys all posted about him, and the number of you who met him out at games, and just the number of you that have actually met each other.

Really cool board, not that you guys don't know that. The banter here cracks me the horsefeathers up sometimes, and for years when something crazy has happened during games, my first thought is "i gotta see what the board is saying about this!" Plus, it seems like there aren't folks w/ agendas on here driving the conversation into a ditch, like on the board of my favorite college team (not a poster there!)

Bill Murray met with President Obama today, dressed like this...

Cubs better lock it up tomorrow because

While neither Obama nor the White House would give an official explanation for the meeting, Murray will be receiving the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on Sunday at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

I remember my first post was about an hour before Game 2 of the 2003 NLDS. One of my first arguments was someone telling me how wrong I was because I thought Juan Cruz would never be a starter due to his skinny frame, and then I remember there was a thread for predicting Shawn Estes' ERA in Colorado and yours (Tims) was the lowest predicted ERA. I pointed out that if he had that ERA it would be like the 5th best ERA in Rockies history to that point, and you responded "hmm can I change my answer". I remember feeling really cool that I was able to point that out to the site founder.

i just realized that unless we go up 3-0 in the world series, i will not have a single completely stress free game of baseball to watch for the remainder of 2016.

i've been tense as hell, especially since tuesday.

My grandpa passed down his love for this team to me. He's the biggest fan I know. I want this so bad for him. Let's go

My story is most the same. He wasn't the biggest fan I knew, but he got me into the Cubs in the summer of 1984. He died in 1996, but was born in 1909 right before the Cubs began their last season as defending champions.

May 29, 2003 for me. I remember the 03 playoff conversation almost vividly.
