I just read that the all star game being used for home field advantage has been done away with. Any truth to that?

I'm just happy to see that the All Star Gane no longer determines home field advantage

Oh geez. I read this whole thread before posting that. At least I thought I did.

Home field advantage in the Fall Classic will no longer be determined by the winner of the midsummer classic, per the Associated Press, ending a 14-year experiment. Home field advantage in the World Series will now be determined by regular season record of the two pennant winners.

I love how for years they were like "it's too difficult logistically we have to reserve hotel rooms" or something and now they just randomly decide that it's doable now.

Glad though. Also glad we could take advantage of the last year of the rule in a backwards way.

The thing is...HFA in the WS never really mattered...at least as far as competition...

The American League has owned the All-Star Game since that karat was added, winning 11 of 14 midsummer classics, including each of the last four years.

The National League has won eight of the last 14 World Series, including all three years (2010-2012) with home field advantage. The St. Louis Cardinals won Game 7 of the 2011 World Series at home, the first Game 7 since the World Series was tied to the All-Star Game. But in the last two Games 7, the NL has prevailed on the road, with the San Francisco Giants prevailing in Kansas City in 2014 and the Chicago Cubs winning in Cleveland in 2016.

But this just makes so much more common sense this way.

I'm glad it's gone, but I'm a little surprised by this move. In the past, MLB at times has been slow to reverse course on policy enacted by a former commissioner while he's still alive. Even when he's dead, for that matter. Sort of a way of saving the guy from being embarrassed by the reversal, I guess.

This is easily the most personality I've ever seen from Lester.

I thought this was better

that explanation still made no sense because they didn't know who the teams would be

The explanation was that as soon as the playoffs are set you know the potential host cities for games 1,2,6,7 and the potential host cities for games 3,4,5. There was some level of certainty.

Sure but it's still 5 possible places

And after day 1 it's 4.

They said that was easier than 9. I'm guessing they have to put some sort of deposit down on 100 rooms or so to lock it in. It's probably not a huge amount for MLB purposes but they fret over little things all the time.

I'm not sure why the NHL and NBA don't have that problem with 16 teams to account for (or I guess 15 since worst record in playoffs cant get home court/ice). Of course their playoffs last 2.5 months so they have a little more time

True. DL goes from 15 day to 10, as well.

This is interesting. I wonder if we will see more people put on the DL with minor injuries than before rather than just keeping them out of the lineup for a few games.

I'm sure they do have that "problem" but as I said, it's probably not that big of a problem. It was an excuse more than anything. And I'm guessing the extremely prolonged nature of those playoffs plus the fact that they don't play back to back to back nights makes it a different animal.

MLB has the date of every potential game set in stone long in advance. The NHL schedule gets reshuffled for each round and I assume the NBA is similar.

I will look back fondly on the era of the All Star Game determining home field advantage because it gave us 1 more Schwarber start.

The new QO stuff is weird.

Yes teams won't lose a 1st round pick but big market teams that sign a QO FA will lose their 2nd and 5th round picks AND 20% of their IFA money ($1m). That almost seems as severe or more severe than simply losing a 1st rounder don't you think?

And because what you lose depends on where you are in the revenue sharing spectrum (if you receive rev sharing the penalty is only your 3rd pick and nothing else (which is likely a 2nd rounder for teams that get the small market comp pick), if you don't contribute or receive its a loss of 3rd rounder and 500k of IFA money.

There will be additional drug testing, and players will no longer accrue service time while suspended

I can't wait for the first team that's out of the playoff race and slips some HGH in a players drink to limit service time.

I thought I read it was teams above the luxury tax that received the harsher penalties

Wish they would have made it so FAs who were suspended (I'm looking at you, Jhonny Peralta) could only sign for league minimum upon their return.

Trying to imagine a time traveler telling me in the wake of the 02 ASG: "Don't worry, this uproar is a good thing. MLB will now link WS home-field to the ASG winner. Then some year in the future the Cubs make the Series, and the AL having won HFA (and 4 games of DH) ironically helps a Cubs team with the best record in baseball by getting a critical bat back into the lineup, and ultimately breaking the championship drought. Trust me."

Clearly the most cockamamie plot line ever. Would've LMAO.

Indians would've had it in an even numbered year anyway (had the rule not been changed)...
