With the increased emphasis on interleague play, how does having 2 different rules make any sense? "this time it counts" hasn't made the all star game any more relevant. It just means that one team is getting screwed every year.

Agreed re: interleague play. They also need to do away with player stats "resetting" when they're traded between leagues midseason.

I'm pretty sure this has already happened.

Seems like when the Cubs acquired Chapman that all the stats you'd see for him during Cubs games were just with the Cubs. I've seen various sports sites split up the stats as well

Bruce Levine was on the Score this morning sounding pessimistic a deal gets done by Dec 2nd, and said a lockout could happen. First I heard of that, and doubtful it would come to that, especially considering earlier this week Manfried was very positive a deal would get done.

Yeah that's the first I've heard of a lockout. Just because they don't get a deal done doesn't mean there'd be a lockout or anything if both sides are still amicable and making progress, which from all reports they have been.

I'd like to think that the one league that doesn't have a salary cap and doesn't seem to want one could work out whatever differences they have with the players.

that's probably the best way to do it. give teams compensation picks but don't punish the teams that sign players. i would think the players union would like that.

They should go with an NFL style system. Just net all gains against all losses and then any losses that exceed gains are awarded comp based on the level of the player. That way you dont get comp merely by shuffling around good players.

horsefeathers that. That sounds like a "we're not giving the NL the DH so we'll throw this bone at the players" type of concession

The article said it's a concession to the players since the league wants to drop to ~28 players in September instead of the full 40-man being available (because of the boogyman that 40-man roster OMG games take forever in September narrative).

hey why not screw the minor leaguers out of another one of the few nice things they have

Seems like close to a wash in aggregate, you gain a MLB salary for 5 months at the expense of a handful of guys for 1 month. Plus you make September baseball a better approximation of the real thing.

I really don't get why they can't just make a rule that a team can carry up to 40 in September but they can only have a 25 man roster for each game that the manager declares before the game. Add a provision that a pitcher who starts has to be on the roster for the next 4 games so teams can't just leave the 4 starters who aren't going that day off the roster.

So, if the owners & union cannot get a deal done and baseball is over forever, then the Cubs will be the final WS Champs, huh? I guess that's the upside.

How many teams actually spend to the luxury tax? The players should be asking for a salary floor. They could get support from the rich owners as it forces the Minnesota Twins of the world to invest their luxury tax dividend into making the team better instead of simply keeping the money.
