What do we know about Federowicz?

-28 years old

-Career .547 OPS in 271 PA over 4 seasons with LA

-In his short time in the majors he was worth 1.2 wins defensively (according to BR) and -0.9 wins offensively.

-Only had 101 PA last year, all in the minors, with a slash line of .202/.257/.383/.640

-Has a .940 OPS is 41 PA this year at Iowa

-Is not Montero, Schwarber or Contreras

Isn't he just the backup catcher? It's not like they will go Javy first then Montero.

I would imagine if it's anything besides a 1 run game in the 8th inning or later, they'll go Javy if Ross happens to get hurt. If he's not hurt, Ross will stay in even if the game goes 500 innings.

So, are they just really committed to having Contreras get a full season in Iowa?

Is the issue that he needs more work behind the plate, they don't want to rush his development, or they don't want to start his service clock?

They probably view the Montero thing as a short term injury and in those instances there's no reason to bring up the real prospect when you have a suitable temp available to do exactly what you brought him on board to do.

No, I just think they don't want to rush him/have him work on a few more things. If Montero/Ross need to hit the DL probably from June on, especially if it's for more than the 15 days I'm guessing Contreras comes up then

Have I mentioned I miss Schwarber lately? If not for his injury this would barely be an issue - get him some more time behind the plate.

It still is barely an issue.

Yeah, Montero will miss what, two weeks? Not that big of a deal.

He's not ready defensively, is too valuable a prospect to be jerked around and Federowicz is acceptable for 15 days as a backup.

Doesn't sound like they think this will linger or last more than 15 days for Montero so that's good.

Probably. He's got fewer than 600 ABs above high A. He's probably not ready.

Sorry but that's horsefeathering stupid, we have how many other guys that were called up with the same number of ABs? Willson is ready, and this move is stupid as horsefeathers. I hate having catchers that can't hit.

Well, those other guys were being called up to cover positions people were (mostly) confident they could cover; Schwarber being the big exception. With Contreras, they still really want/need him to work on his defense behind the plate.

Also as good as Contreras is/can be I think it's fair to say he isn't on the baseball savant level that Bryant, Russell and Schwarber were as prospects.

There's a lot more factors that go into being ML ready as a catcher, as well. It's not just thinking his bat is ready to throw him out there.
