who?

as a tribute to the good baez of old, we should all say "who?" whenever baez comes up since he's like the 12th best cub and minor league baez never knew who the twelfth best guy on his team was.

Baez is tied with Kinsler for the MLB lead in defensive runs saved among second basemen. They're both at 12.

Ian Kinsler has played over 1200 innings at 2B this year

Javy has played under 400 and doesn't even show up when you filter the page by "qualified" players. LOL.

That's almost incomprehensible.

So, on this boring off-day for the Cubs, I decided to throw together another montage featuring all of the tags Javy has made since the first video. If you're shocked there was this much footage from just a month and half, you probably don't watch Javier Baez very often. Enjoy!

his insta account makes way more sense to me if it's someone else posting most of the pics

but i like the idea that he's so into himself that he's just wowed at all these pictures so i choose to believe that

Knowing that power is still in there, lurking, is what makes me still have very high hopes for his future. Now that we know the baseline with his defense is "maybe the best in the league," it makes him a safe bet to be a solid player. But, the power -- my goodness, if it emerges. Even if it is coming with a .310 OBP or whatever. We all know what he needs to do to improve, and it's a big task. But an ersatz Minor League Javy with the bat would make for an incredibly valuable player.

He's a true work in progress. He's nowhere near a finished product. Quite a few scouting reports said it'd take him longer to max out than others, based on the adjustments he'd have to make and if he could make them. My true guess is he throws up a few Soriano type offensive seasons, between 27-32. Add in his D, which the scouting reports just missed on.....He's going to be such a fun player for us.

part of me wonders if we actually look to move zobrist this offseason rather than Javy tbh. With Contreras emerging and Schwarber returning, it could make sense

The thing that I find funny is he was always considered a low floor player but the opposite is true. His defense and base running can carry him to a 3-4 win season and if the bat ever catches up its a wrap.

I don't think we need to move either. There's plenty of AB's across the diamond for Javy to take. If he busts out offensively and forces himself into a true everyday role, then Zobrists versatility allows to take over what Javy does now-just more offense based obviously.

I keep saying it, but Soler seems to be the guy we're most likely to move. Especially if we keep Dex. Because Almora is a true 4th OFer and can play all 3 spots extremely well. But we may keep Soler. Depends on exactly how far his trade value has fallen. I asked Longenhagen a chat or two ago and he thinks you'd still get a top 75-100ish type pitching prospect for him. Or Candelario, for that matter.

So, finding that, or the equivalent value in pitching, seems like a decent idea to me. Especially if you worry that between his lack of defensive ability and his constant injuries, that this could easily still be his high water mark, for trade value.

At any rate, I don't see Javy or Zobrist going anywhere. They both have roles, even if they just swap them. And as big of a Javy fan as I am, I don't think that'll need to happen next year honestly.

Yep. Even when he was striking out 40% of the time (or whatever it was) in 2014, it was obvious that he was good enough defensively that if he could just be passable offensively, he'd generate enough value with the power and defense to be playable.

He didn't hit great against RH (.689 OPS) but his K-rate was only 26.4% but it certainly wasn't disastrous. With how terrible he was in 2014, the progress he's made has been pretty impressive.

I'll take "who is Soriano but with amazing defense and who sticks at 2B?" for a quadzillion dollars, please, Alex.

Soriano is exactly the kind of hitter I can see Baez being - the free swinging nature, the fact he never, ever, ever gives less than 100% on every swing.

Soriano with gold glove defense is a helluva player.

After scouring the internet for celebration coverage and interviews, I don't remember where I saw it. But a reporter in the clubhouse asked Javy, "Do you know you are now a nationwide superstar?" Javy's response: "Yeah."

Also, someone interviewing Javy was talking about how a bunch of guys contributed. He then asked Javy about how balanced this team is. Javy said, "Yeah, I've been playing really great defense. And I've been hitting really good, too."
