oh, come on. as it is, 2 is just an arbitrary cutoff point that looks cool. it tells you just about nothing.

i mean, if you want to look at what you're talking about, you just go look up who led the league in ERA+.

I really don't understand your problem with this. I get that people often use stupid filters to talk about random Kurkjian factoids, but if you admit that sub 2 is cool and leading the league is cool then I do not see what the problem is with pointing out the very small number of cubs who have led the league with a sub 2.

because it is basically a randon kurkjian factoid. it's an anomaly resulting from and related to an accomplishment not an actual accomplishment itself (see my previous edit)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-cubs-miguel-montero-saved-season-spt-0928-20160927-story.html

So in an effort to salvage what was a miserable five months, Montero started to look at video of a player set to retire after this season — Red Sox slugger David Ortiz.

"It's not that I wanted to hit like him," Montero said. "I wanted to see how he got going because he's got the leg kick when he gets started. I was watching in slow-motion and told myself I'm going to practice this in the batting cage."

The left-handed-hitting Montero admitted incorporating Ortiz's leg kick felt uncomfortable. But, with a .199 batting average, Montero had nothing to lose.

So after three rounds of batting practice, Montero felt ready to try the new stance and leg kick in a simulated game against Hector Rondon on Sept. 4.

"And I felt pretty good," Montero said. "I saw the ball well, I recognized his pitches. I put a couple good swings on him. And it was the turning point this year. I felt good with my timing. It actually was there."

The timing couldn't be any better for Montero and the Cubs as they prepare for the playoffs. Montero has batted .355 (11-for-31) with three doubles and two home runs since adopting the new approach, and the Cubs now have a productive left-handed-hitting catcher to combat tough right-handers.

"I know I'm better than how I started the season," Montero said. "I know that. But sometimes it's hard to get back into it. I feel great, and I'll keep on working, and let's see what happens."

Montero's troubles started with bulging disks in his lower back that landed him on the 15-day disabled list for three weeks early in the season.

hmm was it the adjustment or is hector so broken that this simulated session reestablished miggy's confidence :-k :-k :-k (just kidding)

The hell is the point of stupid ass stats like this?

Either pick the sub 2 or the leading the league part...what the hell does filtering to both do for you?

in other words, sub 2 ERAs are very cool. leading the league in ERA is very cool. paring it down to the guys who did both is nothing but a pointless anecdote.

why? If lots of guys did it but didn't lead the league maybe that shows you it was relatively easy to do in those years. sub 2 and leading league is cool

hell, just last year arrieta had a considerably lower ERA (and better ERA+) but didn't lead the league because grienke happened to be lower.

you know what else is dumb? pitching wins. It actually tells you nothing about how good the pitcher has been all year. watch out for more hot takes at my twitter page

i'm allowed to bitch about dumb things still being said even if (more like because) people here easily understand that those things are dumb

It'd be amazing. I'd move my flight from Thursday morning to Wednesday in order to get back in time and just cram all my Wed meetings into the morning. And I'd definitely be at game 6 and/or 7.

You think spending 2 days with IP attorneys in the bay area is a humblebrag? You can take my place.

You guys think I'm an horsefeathers. Spend a few minutes with folks who regularly do IP work for Google and Apple and see how long you can last before stabbing yourself in the eye

I think it was specifically about the "expensive hotel" portion of the comment, rather than the hanging with lawyers thing.

That's just where the conference is. I'm not staying there.

going to a conference with lawyers at an expensive hotel but then having to leave that hotel to stay at a more budget friendly establishment is about the exact opposite of a humblebrag.

badger, apologize to this man.

Oh it's my choice. The firm is horsefeathering paying for it, not me. They'd pay for the conference hotel.I like sitting in the bar watching whatever sports are on tv at the end of the day. You can't do that as easily in a fancy hotel full of horsefeathers lawyers. But it's SF, none of the hotels are exactly cheap.

The only reason I mentioned it is a cubs t-shirt doesn't really stand out if I'm walking through the holiday inn lobby. But I'm glad we've thoroughly dissected another throw away line here.

At your meetings, when one of the attendees asks, "did you attend harvard or yale?" please answer, "No, but I did stay at a holiday inn express last night."

because i imagine the list of cubs with sub-2.00 era's is too long for their purposes, considering the franchise dates back to when all baseball players were 4'5" malnourished leprechauns with stale french bread loaves for bats

Only the NL teams play on Saturday, so wouldn't the earliest game be about 5-6 CT? Then the second game like 7:30-8:30 CT?

Last year the games started at 4:39 and 8:07 CT

In 2014, 4:38 and 8:38 CT

In 2013, 4:37 and 8:08 CT

You are looking at LAD @ WAS and NYM/STL/SF @ Cubs. I'm guessing the Cubs will be the late game

oh man i would love that 4:30 start so much but you're probably right

Guess you're rooting for the Dodgers to get home field over the Nats. Cubs will definitely have the earlier games if MLB can put LA in the late start.

Oh, wow. I didn't even realize that was still in play.

Dodgers lost tonight so the Nats have them by 2 in the loss column. Dodgers have the tie-breaker though. With how banged up the Nats are right now it's not impossible to happen.
