Okay I'm far from a professional writer but I've always been under the impression a writer adds things in parenthesis to provide further context to attributed quotes when people say things like someones first or last name only. What the horsefeathers is going on in this paragraph?

What he probably said:

“It’s one thing to say that, but it’s another thing to just hit as many home runs as Theo hit. It’s the Addison Russell trade... Incredible. It’s getting Arrieta and Stropy for Clevenger and Whatshisface. Bam... Fortunate enough to get Kris Bryant after the Stros took Appel."

That is a fair assessment, and I lol'd at Whatshisface

I've read this 8 times and it still doesn't make sense to me

montgomery has two pitches in the top 25 in both grounders and whiffs among pitches that aren't fastballs

So does something like this typically translate to starting success (with Carassco cited I'd imagine so) or would it mean we have a potential lights out Andrew Miller relief pitcher?

so it just dawned on me that cubs convention is right around the corner, which doesn't mean all that much to me in itself, as I've never gone nor will i, but it does mean that pitchers and catchers reporting is right around the corner after that

I think we are right around 45 days for pitchers and catchers reporting, I saw late last week on twitter it was just under 50

i thought it might be closer than that since it usually starts around valentine's day and this year there's WBC...lemme check.

can't find the actual report date. the site google pulled up says TBD and a quick look at cubs.com didn't help.

Also have never been to the convention and have no interest in it either but I always enjoy watching video of the opening ceremonies, and the hype video... they hype video this year should be pretty fun.

This isn't even a hot take because it's really just a bad take, but is anyone else not really all that excited for next year? I'm looking forward to the highlight videos and everything else, but I keep coming back to the fact that it is incredibly likely I just saw the greatest Cubs season I'm ever going to see, and I just can't see how 2017 can possibly stack up.

The less terrible side of me keeps saying I had a pretty great time watching the hawks in 2013 and 2015, but something about all the history the Cubs overcame makes this seem a bit different. I don't know...I'm sure this will last until the first walk off game (or really just watching the cardinals fans when we roll into town in April)

Your tune will change when the Cubs are 80-20 in July.

Yeah I think it's just a mindset change. Up until and including last year, every time we were in contention, we were going for what would almost definitely be the greatest championship I will ever experience, given the history and everything else. But now we get to play the bully role, which isn't quite the same but is still pretty effing enjoyable.

You think they're going to have a bunch of injuries or something?

Im not quite ready for 2017 to start because it means the amazingness of 2016 is officially in the past.

But that being said I am totally pumped and not looking at 2017 as (not living up to 2016) like you stated. I am in Jordan Bulls mode and just ready for this team to stomp all over the league for the next decade.

I went for the first time last year. It was a great time. Too many signature people. The sessions with the braintrust were relatively empty. I even got to ask Joe a question.

I told my 65 year old father, "If we are ever going to go to the Convention, this is the year." Seeing this team introduced for the first time was pretty special. That said, I imagine this year would be even better. The main difference is I got my tickets by meeting someone on Craigslist for $50(all he wanted was the peel off chance to stand in an autograph line), and resold them for $40 on Sunday morning.

This year, last I checked, you're looking at $400 a ticket on StubHub.

Not with you at all here. Recent articles notwithstanding, I want to make every other fanbase well and truly despise the Cubs. And it's going to take more than "awww, they finally won a championship...good for them" to do that.

Set new goals to make it more interesting for you. How about back to back championships...or hell, lets take aim at the Yankees three-peat from the late 90's. Best season you've ever seen? How about best 5 year period you've ever seen?

The nice thing now is that any failure to accomplish any of those goals is cushioned by having won the World Series.
