Russell is pretty clearly a POS. If the decision was mine, he’d be off this team. But I can’t pretend that the Cubs haven’t already crossed this bridge. They traded for a woman beater in 2016. I stayed a fan, then. I’ll stay a fan, now. This whole thing just sucks.

This is one of the most terrible threads I've ever read. First off, screw Addison for being worse than the soap scum on Yadi Molina's shower shoes. If that wasn't bad enough, now we're criticizing Rizzo for not making strong enough of a public display? I don't think you can get any more self righteous than to criticize Rizzo for not waging an all out SJW war against a guy who he doesn't know if he's going to ever be back in the clubhouse with him or not. Ducking ludicrous.

what do you have against social justice?

im not gonna come down too hard on rizzo here, it could be a weak quote or defense of russell because rizzo is a bad person, or it could be a guy trying to say nothing and stay out of it and word vomiting a little bit.

What do you think all of the other players said? Surely Rizzo wasn't the only one asked. If he'd said no comment, they would have just not printed anything about his opinion.

Disagree. He's one of the faces of the franchise. Whatever Rizzo said, it was going to be published or tweeted. As it should be. Nobody gives a horsefeathers what Randy Rosario thinks.

Bryant? Lester? Baez? Lemme know when you read those quotes.

It's totally possible Rizzo early on is the only one who was available. If you think KB, Lester and Baez are all going to just go no comment when they are eventually asked, well, I think you will be wrong.

ETA: Had someone asked Bryant yet, and he said no comment, trust me, it would be tweeted that KB declined to comment.

I don't even think people who are critical of his comments are coming down too hard on him. I'm just a little blown away (but shouldn't be) by the MRA types jumping to his defense and attacking anybody with a negative thought about his statements.

horsefeathers like this is one of the reasons I long ago got tired of Maddon's dumb shtick. You don't have to horsefeathering be "on" all the time, and you DEFINITELY shouldn't be right now. Don't play like you're just dumb ol' kook.

Yeah at this point I'm regretting saying anything because it's turned into this whole thing. Again, all I said was 'Do better', which I 100% believe he could have, both because I think there were better options and because he's been a really high character guy publicly the whole time he's been with the Cubs.

Ultimately, this looks like we won't be seeing Russell in a Cubs uniform the rest of the year, which is a good thing.

He may end up doing something dumb later or having done something dumb, but I think Rizzo to this point has earned the benefit of doubt. From his perspective there weren't many good answers to that question, and he chose one of the poorer ones.

I would agree with Bryant's Disco Ball that Rizzo's reaction would be Tweeted out regardless. He's basically the player spokesman for the Cubs and has been for a while.

Fine, it took an entire team of bad people and idiots to break the curse (it’s baseball so, sure the odds were definitely looking that way anyways) Still worth it probably

I'm not sure that they can suspend him without pay if he hasn't been actually charged with a crime.

Yeah that might be a little hard to do, putting him on the restricted list is probably the thing to do

I was probably hoping that they could hurt Russell financially. I figured there wasn’t anything they could legally do.

But I do think the Cubs should help him. And then cut him. I really don’t want him to be part of this organization.

Chapman was suspended by MLB despite no charges being filed.

As for help: I’d be surprised if Russell sees this as anything other than persecution. Maybe his career being threatened will motivate him.

My respect for Melis for speaking out and for rebuilding her life. I hope Addison’s other partners are safe, because this will be a dark time for him.

As a fan? He has to go.

listening to the Score right now....Joe Maddon's press conference was not great. The tweet quoted is right, when asked about the blog post he said "Should I have read it?"

Like come on dude.

Rizzo should do better.

If he has the character I think he does, he will in the future.

Of course Theo's response is a million times better than Joe. Wtf was Joe drinking?

FTFY.

It’s wildly apparent to me that MLB and the Cubs need a communications consultant on gender/DV issues on both corp communications AND ops. Theo’s response is better, but not ideal.

The whole front office and everyone involved in anything continually fucks these things up and we continue to employ shitty people and care only about winning. But Joe Maddon is a horsefeathering moron and he is completely detached from reality. He comes off tone-deaf nearly every time he is asked about something that isn't baseball. His worldview sucks and he is a bad person.
