When I first saw this post headline, for a split second I thought they wrapped up another one year deal with him, then I realized it's an old headline.

I don't blame him. That one year deal was obviously the free agent deal of the year from our perspective, and now he can go back onto the FA market and get paid on a better note than before (at least as far as how he's perceived defensively...).

I really want Dex back. But I can see him getting 4 or 5 year offers in this market. So, I'm prepared for him to leave, because I doubt we're interested in that type of commitment. I'd give it to him, but I can see why the FO may not want to.

If he's gone.....DEX YOU ARE AWESOME

I didn't remember he even had an option to decline.

I believe his option was for 5m, which we all expected him to decline since he is definitely more valuable than that.

Will be sad to see him go, just trade for Trout.

No. We obviously don't even need him. But mainly, it depletes the ridiculous depth we have and makes injuries much harder for us to handle. I love Trout, but we are better off standing pat on our depth, as far as I'm concerned.

Clearly he was serious.

horsefeathers, my sarcasm meter must be shot.

With Dexter, it's very hard for me to reconcile how much I like him with how it probably doesn't make sense for the Cubs to give him a big contract. Just seems like there's literally nothing not to like about him (unless you want to MAGA or something maybe).

Screw it, Theo should just give everyone except for Chapman and Lackey 10 year contracts and have a decade-long World Series party.

I have had such a horsefeathering blast watching Dexter Fowler be our leadoff hitter the last 2 seasons. He's everything you could ever want out of a hitter from an approach perspective.

It's too bad that it doesn't make sense for the Cubs to pay him what he will get from someone else. But we'll never forget him here.

Agree. He's been an amazing and important player for us filling a huge role and obviously seems like an awesome dude who everyone loves on the team. But it just doesn't make a ton of sense to bring him back for the likely years/money it's gonna take. That being said it seems championship teams often make moves to keep guys for the sake of keeping the band together even when it doesn't make the most sense, I'd be fine if we do that with Dexter for more irrational reasons to keep him than the rational reasons that suggest getting rid of him. I also wouldn't be surprised if Theo announces we re-signed Dexter when he gets on stage today.

Is Fowler replaceable? Sure, of course. But not easily. Switch hitter, plus defender, high on-base guy, and when he gets on base, the Cubs record was off the charts. Almora could plug in, Heyward could move to center, etc., but the lineup would look different. Lineup construction doesn't matter blah blah blah, but I'm not sure who would be that guy at the top of the order next year

Considering the logjam in the outfield, are there any trade scenarios for a top CF prospect that make sense? If we resigned Dex (if he could be had by overpaying on a shorter 3 year deal, maybe...), we could build a package around Soler and / or Almora for a top CF prospect that would be ready by Dex's second or third year. Or do we hold those guys to target pitchers so we can reload after 2017? Decisions like these represent great problems to have...

I want nothing to do w/ Almora being a regular starter next season. 4th OF'er? Fine.

Zobrist for leadoff barring an acquisition.

Yeah, Almora should be OF Baez in 2017. Little bit larger role than Szczur had this year, but bench player who's starts are dictated by his ability to hit or an injury. There's plenty of ABs to be had between Zobrist's rest, Schwarber and/or Heyward sitting vs. tough LHPs, and Fowler (if back) getting rest and likelihood of injury.

Almora is a top CF prospect. Not one that I want to give 600 PAs to next year, but that's going to apply to any CF prospect that you can trade for too. You've got Almora, Soler, and Baez(via Bryant/Zobrist to the OF) from the right side and Heyward and Schwarber playing most every day from the left side. Almora, Heyward, and Baez are elite of elite defenders that are potentially used as defensive replacements. You can mix and match to keep people fresh and protect against individual weaknesses while seeing if Almora can take enough pitches to be next-gen Kevin Pillar. You can do it even if you trade Soler to be honest, since the Coghlans and Szczurs of the world can soak up 200 PA in specialized roles if you want further depth.

I wouldn't be against that, your approach is pretty sound. I just think Almora will turn into a very good starting CFer, but never elite. I could be wrong... My thinking is IF we bring back Dex, then I'd be open to essentially moving a decent-ceiling ML ready prospect for a higher ceiling prospect that's a couple of years away when Dex starts to decline. Extremely unlikely though, I know... If we don't bring back Dex, which seems more likely to me, then that wouldn't make any sense.
