Either way, the more that comes out about this the uglier it gets. So many lives affected that shouldn't have been had the right thing been done

Oh there are totally Paterno truthers. Having spent the last 11 years living in eastern PA, there was almost more of an uproar amongst PSU fans when Paterno got his wins taken away than there was when the whole Sandusky mess was first coming to light.

 

And then when he got his wins back postmortem like 3 years later there were PSU fans dancing in the streets and pounding their chests about how wrong it was to include the great JoePa in the punitive measures.

 

Just really flabbergasted me that these people couldn't even fathom that Paterno could've known. And to a greater extent, they couldn't understand how the PSU football program could possibly be held in any way accountable for what Sandusky did.

I imagine that's what they will do - strong-arm the Sugar Bowl into accepting a New Year's Eve date in non-semifinal years.

 

Another possible idea, though less likely, would be to just move the New Year's Eve semifinals to the nearest Saturday.

 

If they're going to make the change, I'd much prefer games on New Year's Day.

They don't want them getting lost in the shuffle of a day that has 10ish games. They can make them on the 2nd or 3rd or something, just not NYE

Nobody is going to lose them in the shuffle when they are the only 2 games that actually mean anything. I'm pretty sure there is only 1 bowl game at 3:30 (Rose Bowl) and 1 bowl game at night (whatever BCS game it is). Those can easily be the 2 playoff games and the Rose Bowl can just suck it up and play their game on NYE or the 2nd

Nah. NYD will ensure the most viewers, which is of course what they care about. There is enough money at stake that they can probably strong arm the Rose Bowl by threatening to remove them as an Access Bowl or whatever the big six are called now. For the next five years the 2nd falls on a workday, so that ain't happening. NYD is the perfect day for the playoff. The Rose Bowl will just have to get over themselves. So long as they remain an Access Bowl, they'll still get to do their thing on NYD every three years.

Rose Bowl is less important than wanting the games to be on their own day. The championship game is on a work day, why not the final four? You have a 6pm game and a 9:30 game

 

In the BCS era, they split off the Orange, Fiesta etc onto their own nights. Not sure why you'd the playoff would be any different
