See also: the 2018 Cubs and Javier Baez.

Baez certainly isn't hitting at the level he's shown most of the year lately, but he still has an .800+ OPS over his last 19 games and in the month of September. He may not be hitting like an MVP lately, but he's not hurting the team by being an offensive black hole any means.

It wasn't a shot at Baez; it was agreeing with the general idea that a hitter going bugfuck crazy often drives a team to surge even if most of the players around him have been pretty underwhelming. Baez has been fine (at the very least) this month, but I also think him hitting in that time with an OPS that's almost a good 100 points less than what he's been swinging most of the rest of the season has, unfortunately, exposed how relatively precariously most of the rest of the Cubs' offense has been clinging to what he had been doing for a while now. I think the last couple of weeks have been pretty telling: the Cubs as a whole have looked like butt in that time, but in his last week's worth of games Baez has had a .984 OPS and, likely not just coincidentally, the Cubs have managed to actually win and gain some ground in that time. His last two weeks his total OPS is .661, and that's when they were struggling even more and losing ground. I don't think it's a stretch to say this team is largely living and dying with how Baez goes right now.

And we're also actually selling short how much Carptenter has fallen off. Forget that he's had a .772 OPS in the last 19 games; in September so far (14 games), he's had a truly miserable .559 OPS.

Yeah I had updated my post to mention that. The .772 OPS was only that high because of the first game of that 19 game stretch when he went 4 for 5. If you just go by the previous 18 games instead of 19 games it's .651.

He's actually just got a bad hamstring

this may be true so this isn't me saying you're full of it. it's more just wondering out loud.

how could a catcher have a hamstring that was physically bothering them to the point they can't run hard and still be catching? wouldn't the constant squatting and popping up just exacerbate the problem ten fold?

I would think it would be hell

I would think the squatting wouldn't be that bad on the hammy itself, since it's your quads and calves doing the work.

He's clearly lacking the proper amount of testosterone after Bryant removed one of his testis. You can already see the effects of hypogandism, but that will just make for a better HOF speech I guess

he probably just rubbed the testosterone cream on his chest protector, like he does with all other foreign substances

Yeah i was thinking more of popping up out of the crouch.

The Brewers still horsefeathers me up because I kinda like the moves they keep making but man it's awesome how inept the cardinals appear to be

like the graveyard of cardinals saviors from just the last like three years is already so deep

Aledmys Diaz (gone)

Piscotty (gone)

Grichuk (gone)

Bader (already kinda blows)

Paul Dejong (sucks)

Pham (traded)

That's why Cardinal fans won't ever let go of Molina.
