Cards about to go to 1-8 versus teams over .500, with a pretty brutal run differential in those games. The pitching will probably get better, but the offense is a pretty safe bet to get markedly worse. I really wouldn't be least bit surprised to see them finish on an island in third place.

They are now at #2 in the 5 stages of grief.

1. Denial check

2. Anger

3. Bargaining "Maybe That next new batch of prospects will be here soon."

4. Depression "Jesus, the Cubs are 15 games up."

5. Acceptance "We suck."

I didn't read the whole thing, but as far as reasons for a minister getting fired, that's on the pretty tame side.

i honestly didn't read any of it. it was more about the fact that matheny seems to be forcing this (or at least to some extent compelling them to attend) on the team and the cardinals seem extra preachy (for lack of a better term) even by baseball standards. i mean, how many teams even do THIS much? i certainly don't hear of much of it with the Cubs (nor have i over the years). it's just weird, especially if/when there are players of a different religion who don't have their boss/employer "offering" something like this.

and i thought this picture was funny, especially the 2-3 guys who look like they're hungover and have no interest in being there

I don't think Matheny is compelling them to attend at all. Or at least that's not explicitly stated. I imagine that this guy was just available for those people that were interested in these kinds of things.

The pic is great though.

i bet you he is. he's one of those zobrist types and is also in charge of the team. at least, that's the sense i get from cardinal fans.

Ha....enjoy that pastor interviewing Matheny 2 years ago...

But he says he doesn't force it..

Every year at spring training I explain to my guys I stand for certain things as a follower of Christ. But you're never going to hear me preach this at you or hold you to any sort of moral obligations that I try to hold for myself.

Cardinals are already six back. Petition to close this thread when it gets to 10 in like three weeks because we don't need to care about irrelevant teams.

Except that watching the BFIB suffer through their decline into suck is great entertainment. Sort of like laughing at Shia LaBeouf stories.

I'm pretty sure that chaplains offered by teams is a pretty regular thing. According to wikipedia:

Every MLB, NFL, NBA & Major League Soccer franchise has a chaplain. Due to financial constraints, very few chaplains travel with their teams. In some cases, especially when an individual coach understands the value of the chaplain to their team, the coach may invite the chaplain to come on a road trip. This happens far more frequently when a team is traveling a short distance to a neighboring city by bus or motor coach, but in some cases, coaches have paid (out of their own pocket) to bring a chaplain on a road trip.

In recent years, much more work is being done by chaplains in specific sports to coordinate and work together so that their players can have support and encouragement from a chaplain even when they are “on the road”.

In 21 years following this team, I have never once seen or heard a reference to a Cubs team chaplain that I can remember. That obviously doesn't mean there hasn't been one, (and I don't really doubt that there has been) but yeah.
