Ronaldo really showing his age out there.  And just missed a PK in ET.

that was an amazing save by Oblak - one of the best ever

too bad Slovenia doesn't have better forwards. Portugal going out with Ronaldo missing a penalty and Pepe giving it away for the game winner would have been an awesome story.

Can't believe they missed on that breakaway at the end.  Waited a fraction too long to get the shot off.  Pretty damn exciting game though all around.

USMNT the better team in the first half, but the referee has been atrocious and they can't get actual shots.

I am completely dumbfounded about the refereeing. If anyone isn’t watching the game and trying to visualize what we mean by bad refereeing, trust me it’s worse than whatever you are visualizing.

I was half-joking when I asked my girlfriend “the fix is in?”

They looked pretty dangerous the first 15 minutes or so or have been pretty uninspired since. Obviously losing balogun doesn’t help. But open it up a little bit here.

This is embarrassing. There is absolutely no excuse for not advancing from this particular group.

Sadly it’s not the most embarrassing thing to happen to America today but that’s a different conversation.

Five thoughts:

  • The US was the better team in the first half, slowed eventually by Uruguay just throwing themselves at US players with no consequence.
  • This refereeing was the worst I've seen at a major competition, ever. Referee was well out of his depth from the start, made a few baffling decisions that I've never seen before, just unforgiveable on this stage.
  • The US was not the better team the last 45 minutes, could not get a rhythm going.
  • It should be an indictment on Berhalter how bad this team is at converting offensive chances. 3 goals with 6 goals expected, just constant at not taking advantage of chances they get.
  • This game was the best they played, but they cost themselves with the performances the prior 2 games. No room for error in this one and they made errors and the officiating made errors, and at the end they didn't create enough shots to win.

The US scored as many goals in this tournament as Panama and Uruguay both did against Bolivia alone (actually Uruguay had more). ]

First time the US has hosted a tournament and failed to make it to the knockouts.

First Copa host ever to not advance to knockouts.  Great stuff.

USA Soccer men lose, again.

Until USA Soccer makes high-level developmental soccer in this country essentially free - which it is in virtually every other country - the U.S. will continue to struggle. The average annual cost to participate in high level soccer from ~10 to ~18 is something like $8-10,000 a year. That excludes almost every really great athlete who would be great soccer player.

Nobody talks about the money. But it’s the money.

Absolutely. The travel team/U## culture in american sports gatekeeps a LOT of great players out of the sport (see also: baseball, softball, lacrosse....)
