Absolutely insane ending to the soccer season in Belgium, with the virtual championship changing hands between three different teams in the final ten minutes of the season, with Antwerp winning it in the end with an equaliser in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

First title for Antwerp since 1957. Pretty crazy. And the team that was top going into the 89th minute hasn't won since 1935.

Sounds like a pretty wild few minutes.

That's putting it mildly.

As a Bruges fan, I had a relaxing afternoon having a beer and watching the game at Union Saint Gilles on TV (we were going to end in fourth place no matter what the results were yesterday), but as the events unfolded I felt sympathy for the fans of the three teams involved - that must have been stressful and, for two of the teams, absolutely heartbreaking.

Apple teasing an event with all of Messi’s teams bodes well for Miami. I think it’s about to happen. We’ll see if he does Beckham loans, but I’m pretty sure Apple would not be doing this if he’s going to KSA.

feel like the saudi's setting aside $20 bil to buy players doesn't bode well for the MLS

I realize there's a little bit of cognitive dissonance to say this in the midst of Messimania, but my general feeling is eh.  They're taking up the Chinese Super League mantle from a couple years ago of paying huge money to players who have to move down a competitive rung, and while MLS has and will do those deals again, they're the ones that have a pretty spotty hit rate.  Maybe it hurts some of the marketing juice you'd get, but the best solution for that is success.  The Fire still can't draw any more fans with or without Shaqiri for example, so the next Shaqiri taking nation state money instead doesn't hurt the league a ton since he's barely been starter caliber in MLS.

DiMaria & Busquets coming to fort lauderdale too.

I love this so much.  There's no way Miami can do this financially without shenanigans, and they tried that already and got punishment they are actually still serving.  Plus with those 2 and Messi in the same 11 the defensive work rate will be so low and the attacking quality so high that every game would be 4-3 chaos.  Permanent MLS After Dark, bring it on.

It’s simply incredible. I’ve seen enough Miami shenanigans first hand to recognize when something is clearly being made up as it goes along. The entire inter miami franchise has been flying by the seat of their pants since Beckham decided the only available town he wanted to open a team in was Miami. The league has been bending over backwards for the Mas-Beckham monorail ever since. The only smart move they’ve made is hiring Chris Henderson from Seattle. Like you said, they’re actively serving punishment for salary cap violations and they’re doing it again, except this time with a player so valuable that MLS will just change the rules for them. Their roster is garbage because they bet everything on getting Messi and keeping enough dry powder to sign as many of his bros as he wants. Henderson has a roster of young runners because he knew if they do get Messi, he and his boys aren’t running and MLS is a league where you’re going to have to do a lot of running. They’ve basically been doing everything, from construction permit approvals to sponsorships, selling the vision that Messi would come, and damn if they didn’t pull it off. It’s so gloriously Miami (borderline fraudulence that they end up getting away with). I love this league.

In far more important news, our best bet to back up & eventually replace Tyler Adams has rejected Canada’s call up.

Messi said he's going to MLS "to get out of the spotlight for awhile"

Oof

That damn spotlight can’t help but follow him anyway. Anyone who has experienced the inter experience knows how absurd this is. They are building a brand from the top down rather than infrastructure up and it’s very entertaining to see them respond to the unprecedented attention.

So excited to see Balogun tonight against Mexico.  Gonna have to figure out a way to do yet another free trial of Paramount+ 🙂
