This feels like a perfect time to stump for my idea for indirect free kicks to be given for unintentional handballs like the one today. It deflected off the shoulder first and grazed the arm, it didn't prevent a great chance for Liverpool and another Tottenham player would have ended up with the ball anyway so Spurs didn't gain any advantage from the ball hitting the arm. Just give an indirect free kick and move on.

 

It just puts the refs in a tough position on some of these to either call a PK and give a team a 75% (or whatever it is) chance at a goal or to call nothing. One team is going to feel screwed over. You can still give out PK's for things like intentional handballs or when a team gains a huge advantage from the hand ball.

 

But giving the refs the option for an indirect free kick is a nice middle ground.

hell, you could also give a direct free kick from the spot rather than the penalty. I would be in favor of reducing the size of the penalty area to something like the width of the goal box extended to the 18 but also allow a penalty to be called on a clear goal scoring opportunity (doesn't hockey have a rule like that?) the world cup final was also ruined by a stupid handling call.

huge win over france for the U20s. Good to have younger age group success. But why the hell is Sargent not there if he isn't playing in the gold cup?

The reasoning they've given is that Sargent has already proven himself at that level last cycle, and even if he just missed the cut(Berhalter's comments sounded like he might've made it if not for Lletget's injury hurting his planned roster flexibility) that opened the opportunity for other people to shine in the U20 WC(like Soto has).

well then get him experience at gold cup with an eye on 2022. I really have no interest in seeing jozy, gyasi, or jordan out there, with perhaps a little exception the latter.

Women's World Cup has begun. US plays tomorrow at 3pm on FOX. Then again on Sunday and the following Thursday.

 

Today is Argentina/Japan and Canada/Cameroon. France, Germany, Spain, Norway, Italy, Brazil and England each won their first games.

 

I won the raffle to get semi-final tickets if the USA makes it there. But the trip is in doubt for other reasons. That would be fun.

bad result for the men yesterday but way too much hand-wringing over it. Hopefully the women can distract us from the calamity that the Gold Cup is going to be.

Sounds like Tyler Boyd is going to sign with Inter Miami, which I don't love. That club seems like a bit of a mess and he had some great step up options in Europe.

I'm not one of the weirdos who shrieks every time a USMNT player decides to go to MLS, but this seems like a weird choice since this appears to be basically the prime moment of his career to make a decisive move, and Miami isn't going to play for 9 months. Would any team take him on loan until the winter, or are they gonna sign him and delay gratification til next summer with a full year loan? Or worst of all, loan him to USL like Adi?

Wasn’t the whole reason they kept Horan on the bench against Spain was so she didn’t pick up a yellow and be forced to miss the France game?

 

Ellis got away with it but it doesn’t seem smart.
