for years, i've been searching for a baseball player who had more walks than strikeouts every year of their career. the closest i could find was ted williams; he had one year where he had the same number of walks as strikeouts.

a few moments ago, i found a player who has done exactly that. and, from what i can tell, he is the only player to accomplish this feat in mlb history.

that player? mr. slumpbuster himself:

I looked up Nellie Fox. He did it every year until his last year where he struck out twice and didn’t take a walk. Just thought of him randomly. Wonder if Grace is actually rhe jbkh one. I imagine yiu have to put some sort of length of time in baseball into the equation. I mean there may have been a guy who had one year in baseball where he had 5 PA and walked once and didn’t strike out. Can anyone confirm Grace is the only player who did this in mlb history?

i originally thought it was going to be someone like tony gwynn or wade boggs like we got the whole 9 mentioned. in my mind, it's someone who had a lengthy mlb career (10+ years).

i found the info here and it's from 2024 so i don't think anyone who has retired in the past three seasons would have joined him. page 12 is where grace is mentioned about being the only player in history to do this:

Wow, thought for sure Boggs did it, but he fell off the streak in his 2nd to last year lol

He damn near had a 2.0 BBK for his career

nellie fox had a 3.33:1 BB/K ratio. borderline video game numbers right there!

I'm not sure if I'm more surprised Grace did it or more surprised none of the superstars from the golden era Yankees did it.  Looks like Berra came really close.  And Gehrig/Dimaggio did it every year after their rookie year.

Yeah the rookie year is the bugaboo. I was shocked to see Boggs outlier season. He must have been hurt or trying sobriety or something.

Ted Williams missing out on a year with 2:2 on a year with 12 PA is rough, lol

Ozzie Smith is another who misses only on a tie 37:37 on 649 PA in 1979

Searching for other possibilities....

If 0:0 tie on 26 PA counts

Honorable mention to Mr I Hate Walks Even Though I Walked A Lot (on two very low PA seasons)

The end or the career misses might be more prevalent than the rookie ones... Damn. A very modest PA minimum would turn up at least another dozen.

Source list I used to find possible candidates (didn't search all 200, focused on biggest differentials, so may be more)

Augie Galan was an absolute monster in old Baseball Mogul

Arky Vaughn with a hair under a 6 BBK in one season. Thats crazy.

He might be the funnest in terms of edging out his place on the list. While many fail on like 1:3 rookie cup of tea he maneges to sneak by with multiple low PA seasons of

16:15

5:3

9:2 (on 36 PA!)

Even his partial season with the 1941 Dodgers makes the list at 3:1 at 31 PA. So two teams in one season.

Yes, that is the occipital lobe back there. He could get vision problems for life if he got hit. But I'm kind of thinking this is some AI creation.

One the one hand: more than likely.

One the other hand: Brewers

So im still doing a little Uber on the weekends until commissions start popping off at my new job.

I pull up and my passenger comes to the window and says he's just waiting for a couple of his friends to come out of the bar. Im like no worries. I recognized dude's face immediately and his name was Jeff. Him and his friends pile in and they start talking baseball. So i waited for a pause in the conversation and I said, hey you're this guy, aren't you. He confirmed and we had a cool chat. I told him my Ernie Clement story. Then I said hey would you do something really cool?

Unfortunately he didn't want to blow up his spot by shouting me out on a tweet/blue sky. But Mr Passan has my number now lol
