I thought it was even more horrifying than that where Maddux went back willing to take the Cubs previous offer which was less than the Braves offered but Himes told him the offer was off the table(the money having been spent on Guzman and...Greg Hibbard?)

this sounds right, actually

Maddux said Himes told him during the 92 ASB that he hadn't yet won 20 games or a CY so therefore he would not be paid commensurate to what he felt he was worth. Maddux then went on a rampage and ran away with the CY. I'm having a tough time finding details on a last ditch effort by either party.

History regards Himes' judgment on Thomas much better than what he displayed with Maddux, whose departure rivaled the Lou Brock-for-Ernie Broglio trade as the worst decision ever by Cubs management. That the infamy of the Maddux Decision still incites anger in Wrigleyville hardly surprises Himes.

"Somebody told me Cubs fans are still irate with me, and I understand why they're irate because, what the hell, I'm not happy with myself that it happened that way,'' Himes said. "Looking back, you can always say I could have approached Tribune Co. (ownership) for a few extra bucks, but I didn't think I should. I thought we had enough money on the table.''

The Cubs offered Maddux, fresh off a Cy Young Award season, $27.5 million over five years. The Yankees came in with the highest bid of $34 million, but Maddux eventually signed a five-year deal with the Braves worth $500,000 more overall than the offer from the Cubs, who ran out of resources after signing free-agent pitcher Jose Guzman. Guzman won 14 games as a Cub.

Agent Scott Boras reportedly made a last-ditch call to negotiate with the Cubs, but Himes informed him they ran out of money after adding closer Randy Myers.

Sidenote: I actually ran into Frank Thomas at the Cosmo when I was in Vegas a couple weeks ago. I'm never that guy, but I kinda gave him a wave and a "big hurt!" and he acknowledged me politely.

Well... at least Myers made a run at the single season saves record... or something

[expletive], the Maddux thing still hurts. I was 13, and that was my first moment of real Cubs heartbreak where it was, like, "horsefeathers, maybe this team really is fucked." Edited by Sammy Sofa

You should've tried to get some Cenegenics off him.

My dad woke me up to break the news to me and I cried like a bitch

i was lucky enough to not care about the cubs until about 1995, so he was just some dorky horsefeathers who we could never ever beat on the braves by then (even though i was aware of him having been on the cubs). i just remember really hating him.

Stroman went on Twitter to blast the Blue Jays for how things went down at his arbitration hearing that he lost. Last year he went on Twitter after he won and exclaimed how much he enjoyed the process and the professionalism of the Blue Jays.

I was definitely hurling some, "but WHY's?!?" at my dad when he was explaining it to me. I couldn't even process why the Cubs wouldn't pay him whatever he wanted.

They were only $400,000 apart $6.5 vs $6.9 million, why not just settle and give him the $6.9 and be nice about it? He's the only cornerstone building block they have, why do something so nominal to piss him off and have a malcontent on the team all year and in future negotiations/dealings?

No doubt, totally stupid. I'd be rather irate if we dragged one of our core players through the mud of that process as well. Between the 2 hearings they were 700k apart total. Buck up and pay your horsefeathering ace. They probably felt that he got one over on them last year and this was only fair or something moronic.

Similar experience to me. My dad basically said "The Cubs have always been cheap as horsefeathers and always will be"

You guys all get to redeem yourselves in like 9 months when you get to call your dads and tell them we signed Bryce

The 2019 Cubs Convention could really be something. A WS championship celebration and Bryce.

"the fundamentals (they're white and round) haven't changed. Glad that's settled."

Apparently Chris Archer said Honeywell talks a lot and he should know his place until he actually takes the mound in an MLB game. Honeywell responded by saying he wants the ace to impress him.

Trouble in Tampa. Honeywell sounds like a pain, send him to the North side of Chicago.

Ok, so my source on this is sketchy, I admit...but apparently there are people that datamine the Funko servers to find out what Pop's are being planned and they're supposedly going to be releasing a bunch of MLB ones, including Rizzo, if that trips anybody's trigger....
