Why retire? He's entitled to $24M per year through 2020 if he just phones in his rehab, Mo Vaughn style. Maybe the Rangers are buying him out of his contract? Or maybe they just all agreed it's a sunk cost.

9 year, $214M contract. And he provided 6.5 fWAR during that time period. $32.9M per fWAR over the length of the contract. Ouch.

That contract may ultimately top some of those "worst baseball contract" articles for the foreseeable future. But if they're somehow getting out of paying the last four years of the contract, that number drops to just $18.1M per fWAR. Still abysmal, but there have been worse.

Still, I'm glad the Cubs FO didn't listen to Mojo on this one.

Prince Fielder ends his career with 319 HR, same as Cecil.

That's pretty damn cool, actually.

The ESPN article made it sound like he was still getting paid, but that could just be bad wording.

The six-time All-Star is scheduled to receive $24 million annually through 2020 as part of the nine-year, $214 million deal he signed with the Tigers in 2012.

Color me a little surprised the Cecil Fielder's value/stats aren't anywhere near as impressive as I thought I remembered. I thought he was awesome when I was a kid.

Yeah outside of his 3 year peak, he was worth about 4 wins combined the other 10 seasons of his career.

Hitting homers onto the roof of Tiger Stadium will do wonders for your legacy.

I mean if Glenallen Hill didn't hit that rooftop homer at Wrigley how many of us would look back fondly on his time with the Cubs, or his time in the majors in general?

Rosenthal and Heyman both tweeted that Fielder is being declared 'medically disabled' and unable to play as opposed to retirement, so that's why he's still going to get paid.

Half his remaining money is apparently being covered by insurance, so the Rangers aren't being completely left up a creek.

I think the Tigers are responsible for paying some of his contract too.

I found a crap ton of gifs of him falling down while running the bases.

The contract turned out pretty good for the guys who gave it to him. Just not the Rangers.

Per BBR, he's owed $24mm/year between 2016-2020, and the Tigers pick up $6mm/year. So technically, they're getting 3 more years of Ian Kinsler for $55, where the Rangers end up with:

That is one hell of a blister.

While I find it funny that it's becoming more and more likely Hill only pitches a handful of games for the Dodgers, it really sucks for Rich who is going to be lucky to snag a 2 year deal now while a 3 year deal seemed likely before the blister issues.

Watching Prince's farewell conference, pretty touching. Dude was a likable guy even though he played on a rival for a long time. Sad situation.

I also think A-Rod has gotten a raw deal pretty much throughout his career and the way this is ending is pretty ugly and silly. Dude is 5x the player Jeter was and he's getting mad disrespected on his way out. Its silly.

Yeah, felt bad for Fielder. Can tell he just loved playing and probably doesn't know how to do anything else based on his upbringing and going straight from HS. But now he gets to retire and be the dad his father never was and his family is set for life.

Meh, I have a hard time feeling too bad for him. Between all the stupid things he's done and his millions in the bank, he just doesn't muster up much sympathy from me.
