ARod to retire after August 12

He's staying on as advisor and trainer until the end of his current contract so I'm guessing he gets paid the same salary but the Yankees won't have to pay him to get to 700 HRs

He's getting all of his contract for this year and next. And he's free to sign with anyone he wants next season. (Assuming anyone would even want him).

I enjoyed this part of ESPN's story on it:

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman confirmed that Rodriguez and the team did not reach any type of settlement regarding the remainder of his contract. Rodriguez, therefore, will be paid the full sum still owed on his deal, which is approximately $27 million.

Like there was ever any sort of chance ARod was going to take less than the full amount he was owed.

just saw this at WSI...can't decide if I think it's terrible or kind of hilarious

In regard to determining the fandom of young children I would like to relate the following story. Everything is true.

Last year my niece's young son who had been wearing an Abreu jersey all season got swept up in Cub fever. He came home from school one day and declared he was now a Cub fan. His father, a diehard Sox fan took it in stride. However several days later the young man received a letter in the mail with a Cubs logo on the envelope. The letter was from "Theo Epstien" The young man was informed that fans like him were not welcome. He was not allowed to be a Cub fan because he had no loyalty. The letter went on to say that he was not allowed to attend or watch Cub games, and the singing of Go Cubs Go was also prohibited. It's amazing what an 8 year will believe. The sender of the letter was not the father but a devious uncle. There's one in every family.

I also love that the guy who wrote this letter probably spelled Theo's name wrong. Too perfect.

What would be even better is if that story made the rounds enough to get back to Theo and the Cubs and they were able to reach out specifically to that kid and give him an all access tour of the confines and let him throw out the first pitch and sit behind home plate while he chatted with Cubs legends and was presented with an autographed ball of the entire Cubs roster, just to stick it up the White Sox's asses.

Guys, I don't think Byron Buxton is very good.

Eh, he's still extremely young. Some kids just can't handle the big leagues that early. I think it's very possible he ends up being fine down the road, but definitely not any time soon.

I just noticed Chris Sale's FIP/xFIP is 3.64 and 3.73 respectively. An outlier year or is he having some struggles that the Sox should be concerned about moving forward?

This has come up a few times on here re: Sale. Going into the season (going as far back as Sox Fest), Sale (much like Arrieta) and Cooper talked about him setting out to pitch to contact more this season, so this would obviously follow from that. Whether you believe that to be the primary reason or not (and therefore just a decline in performance) is up for debate. It hasn't really helped him go much deeper into games, though.

His velo is down from last year but right in line with the rest of his career as a starter.

That makes complete sense. His BABIP against is way way below his career norm (I think its .264)

Arod was on punk'd. I was part of it and he made us destroy the tape. You played softball with my friend Wesley Friedman and I met you once. I lived in Los Angeles for the last 20 years and did 3 episodes and he was one of them. My restaurant was right across from ESPN at lalive. I knew Stan and Neil pretty well. It's one of those things not a lot of people know. Just throwing it out there, might be a fun topic to discuss. The premise was a Boston waiter, when all the talk of him going to the Red Sox from the Rangers, and how everywhere he went they never won., and how Nomar was so much better. His initial response was questioning what Nomar has ever won Then he hit on his wife....ex....got up to fight him. No punches thrown as we all jumped in. But he did politely ask to destroy it as he was in negotiations one I think at that time was the biggest contract in history. We did on my end, but I bet it's out there somewhere. It was his ex wife who set it all up. Love listening to you guys. Please tell Waddle to not get a concussion leaving work. I also hired Jose Conseco for one day for our companies softball tournament, he only agreed if Ozzie was allowed to come. Told all the other restaurants I hired this guy who supposedly was really good...suffice to say, the other restaurants were not very happy with me. And he cheated in a coed softball tournament. That's for another day. Love the show.
