Can't wait to see how much Heyward gets.

I don't know why the media keeps projecting him in the low 20's.

Guess we'll see but I doubt the market values him that lowly. If it does, I suppose it says something about how his defensive value is viewed.

I kind of think the general reaction to Heyward's deal among fans who like WAR will be one of surprise at how "cheap" he comes. I don't think he'll top Price (or maybe even Greinke if he got 6 years) in total dollars. Some of it due to not every team being enamored with the type of player he is, but also there are some other really good corner outfielders available. I still doubt we can afford him without being super creative, but that's my take. Could look really silly by next week.

Bill Shaikin said Dodgers never got comfortable with a 6th year being guaranteed. Thought they were close to a deal Wednesday but obviously didn't happen.

I've been thinking the opposite, to be honest. There's a whole lot of people under the impression that Heyward is going to be getting < 25 million AAV, when it seems really likely to me that he's going to get 30 per, or near it if he wants to go all out with duration and an opt out. While there are other outfielders available, pretty much everyone could use an outfielder(especially since Heyward is a CF option) so his market is bigger than a premier SS or 1B.

yeah. i couldn't feel more comfortable about giving a guy huge money and huge years. lots of sustainable skills and only 26. after all these years of that type of FA not really showing up and teams having to swallow hard and give guys around and past 30 deals approaching 10 years, i have to think GMs think that too.

With the Dodgers and Giants losing out on Greinke and the Cards offering 180 on Price, my stance has changed. Heyward is heading towards 250 and maybe higher.

Arizona, a fairly irrelevant team with a lukewarm fan base is able to sign a $1.5B TV deal and is suddenly plucking premier FAs away from LA.

I know it's more complex than that but damn we are totally going to start this Cubs network immediately after the bubble bursts aren't we?

As long as the team doesn't go in the tank, a Cubs network is going to be extremely valuable live television, however that all shakes out. I'm not really all that worried.

Soo Harper is gonna get what, $350 million in a few years when he's a FA?

if he stays something like 2015 Harper? why not $400M?

I'm not stunned the Diamondbacks made a big splash, but I am surprised that it was Greinke. I kept thinking that the Dodgers would win out in the end, but even they seem to be showing restraint (if the reports are correct, they gave 1 less year, and more than 50 million less).

I'm still not sold this Diamondbacks team is a solid playoff caliber team, unless they are willing to go all-out and spend hard. They may compete for a spot, but you make this splash for an aging arm ... you're hoping to be in the hunt right away. I think they've got a lot more spending if they want to go to that point.

Hell, I'm not so sure 400 million wouldn't be the starting point if he performs anywhere close to what he did last year. It's probably going to be a 10+ year deal (albeit, probably with some sort of opt-out in there for him).

By the time he's about to hit the market, the Yankees will have a lot of money off, or close to off, the books. It's not hard to figure they are going to go hard after Harper or Trout when they become available.

Harper will get at least $500M as will Trout.
