i can't believe we're in contention in september, in a 1-run game, and there's a scenario where clayton richard relieves dan haren so that we can get a PA for tommy la stella and take out addison russell. our front office is amazing, so it seems crazy that we couldn't have done better than this at the deadline. that was not a good double switch

I'm almost wondering if Russell hurt himself on that check swing or something. Double switching the better player out so the pitcher's spot is 9 spots away instead of 8 is....weird.

We still have seven games against the Cards. It's not impossible.

This is like exhibit A of how fans of Chicago sports teams are terrified babies. You're acting like wanting to gain some ground on the Cardinals, even if ultimately it's nothing more than a symbolic victory, is some kind of cursed blasphemy that nobody should root for because their chances of actually catching them are so slim.

If the Cardinals go 15-16 the rest of the way, the Cubs would need to go 26-6 just to force a one game playoff. And this is assuming the Pirates don't pass them which they would.

You know when I kept posting those "giants record if the Cubs go .500" things, I was posting it in a "not like this is going to happen but.." way not in a "have to win 6 straight games to be at .500 over our last 14 games" way

Nothing is impossible until the magic number is 0, but we'd have to win at least 6 of those 7 for a comeback to be even remotely realistic (which in itself is hard to envision), and even then you're talking about having to gain 5.5 games in 25.

Are you extremely dense or did you not read his post before responding

Do you honestly think people here do not know how to read the standings? Why does it bother you so much when people simply want them to make up any ground and narrow the gap, or joke about catching them?

Didn't the Reds lose like 10 of 12 coming into this series and are bad on the road?

Yes we were supposed to be catching them at a great time.

I don't think any time is a great time to catch anyone at this point unless Arrieta and Lester are pitching in a series.

I mean, I get when people wanted the Cardinals to beat the Giants. It was mildly annoying, but it makes sense. Why anyone could possibly have any issue with anyone wanting the Cubs to win when the Cardinals lose, especially when they're playing hopeless zilches like the Nationals, makes absolutely no sense.

The confident Cubs fans feel like we already have a playoff spot locked up and focus on things that aren't probable but still possible.

The other fans like me get annoyed at the confident ones because we haven't in our mind clinched a spot and just want to focus on whatever makes that the most possible.

No doubt that it's more fun to be a confident Cubs fans, but I still want you all to screw off.

Fine, but how would the Cubs winning when the Cardinals lose, today, negatively impact the Cubs' playoff chances in any way, shape or form? Unless they're playing the Giants or the Dodgers, why would anyone be bothered by people wanting the Cardinals to lose?

I gotta believe the Cubs lead the league in SB allowed...too lazy to look it up.

Coming into tonight they were 2nd behind the Pirates. Pirates allowed 118, Cubs 113, next team at 93

My fear of the Nats is that they play the Phillies, Braves, Marlins and Reds 21 times. And that makes me unhappy.
