He's the best pitcher in the entire organization, best in a long time. Lock him up. He's going to get a nice raise in 2016 already. Let's not let this get to open bidding.

Or you could work with some direct quotes from Jake himself:

‘‘I don’t think I’m a guy that’s going to ask for an astronomical amount of money,’’ Arrieta said Tuesday. ‘‘But I think if there’s a fair deal to be reached, I’m in 100 percent. I like pretty much everything about Chicago and the team that’s in place now, with the guys that are coming up. It’s hard not to want to stay here.’’

Arrieta said having Boras for an agent doesn’t preclude a deal.

‘‘The decision comes down to what I want to do,’’ Arrieta said. ‘‘Scott is very good about giving me all the information and letting his clients make the final decision. There’s a lot of negative talk about the way Scott does things, but I think it’s pretty clear he’s the best in the business. What it really boils down to is what I want, what the team wants, and we kind of go from there.’’

The only way I'd even entertain extending Arrieta if he'd be willing to sign well below market for the FA years (like 12-15mm). Which I guess maybe he'd be open to, he hasn't made all that much money so far in his career. Maybe it's not out of the question he'd sign like a 4/45 deal to lock in significant monies. He's making 3.5mm this year so that probably puts him at what, 7-8 next year in arb? Maybe he'd be open to something like 7, 10, 12, 16.

Boras isn't the reason I wouldn't extend Arrieta. The Cubs have him through his age 32 season, the prime years, at pre-FA prices. Why mess with that?

Because our FO is run by dynamite gents who reward good performances with money as a sign of respect and loyalty.

The other possible reason to extend Arrieta now is that it might be easier to extend him for a shorter amount of years. For example, if the Cubs gave him a 5 year deal now, they could have him for his age 30-34 seasons and plan to let him walk after that. He would probably be much more interested in that sort of deal now to guarantee future security than a 3 year deal when he hits free agency.

In that scenario, they don't necessarily even need to get that much of a discount on the money. Normally of course the money would have to be sufficiently discounted to account for the risk of injury, but in this case the majority of the benefit would come in not having to worry about locking him up for ages 35-37.

David Price made just under $20M in his final arbitration year this season (Super two iirc). I agree that Arrieta is likely a nice price next season, but 2017 his final year of Arb I don't see any reason to expect cheaper than $15M+.

How much do you think he'd sign for, per year?

Based on his comments, I'd think that if they gave him a little more than he'd get in arbitration next year, say $10-11MM, he'd be likely to give a discounted rate for the last few years. Maybe go $10, $13, $15, $16, $17 or something along those lines when at fair market value he'd likely be at $20MM+ those last 3 years. That's 5/$61 and I'd easily go more than that to not have to pay for those 35 and up years like TT said.

That sounds crazy low. Don't commit to older seasons and pay him below market value?

That article is from over a year ago. I think it is fair to say that Arrieta's value has increased substantially since then.
