Utley seems like a guy that could give a team a nice month and a half down the stretch. But yeah, it's not really worth it to take ABs away from a bunch of sub 26 year olds (Castro, Baez, Russell, LaStella), to see if Utley could get back his golden years.

100% agree.

I'd rather add LaStella than Utley. I'd rather add Baez than LaStella. Plus I don't want to give up what it takes to get Utley, unless it's Concepcion or something equivalent

A - I can't imagine it takes all that much ot get Utley

B - I'd definitely rather take a gamble on Utley than add LaStella. EWW.

Maybe they explored this option if baez was traded for a ross or Carrasco before on July 31 and the writer was late to the call.

Utley's BABIP is so far below his career norms this year that he would be a fantastic buy-low candidate depending on price. Also gives another veteran in the clubhouse.

we could make the trade tonight and lastella would be injured again before utley even got here. i don't know why we'd concern ourselves with him at all.

if you could get utley and trade them castro + mid level prospects it would be great. would free up alot of money in the offseason

You're giving up Castro + mid level prospects for this version of Chase Utley? Just stop. Someone mentioned Starlin's salary and you've been acting like he makes $20M the last few days. He's due less than $8M next year.

they gotta get rid of castro's contract!

I think they will need to move some bad contracts in the offseason to make money for extensions (arrieta) and signings like (price or Heyward) so yeah they do!
Posted
They don't really have any players with bad contracts right now.

Maybe in regards to MLB standards these contracts arent bad, but in regards to the cubs other options these are way bad.

Montero (replaced by schwarber who is dirt cheap)

2016 Age 33 $14 Million

2017 Age 34 $14 Million

Castro (Russell is SS of future, Baez waiting in the wings 2b both are dirt cheap)

2016 Age 26 $7 Million

2017 Age 27 $9 Million

2018 Age 28 $10 Million

2019 Age 29 $11 Million

That 21 Million in 2016 alone is huge

The sad thing is there are lots and lots of Cubs fans who completely embrace this mentality. I almost think they'd be horrified if they started spending a ton again.

if the cubs want to sign a price/cueto/grienke type guy and an outfielder like Heyward while trying to lock up arrieta long term they dont have enough money. I guess we could keep castro/montero and go for the best B level guys we can get. that would be a typical cubs move.

That's what got us into this mess. Spending money is what Jim Hendry would do.

Or they just do 2 of those things and not all 3.

Again, if Castro and Montero's contracts are hindering them from making major moves, then they're completely screwed to begin with.

So many stubby little rage-boners over mythical all-prospect teams that cost next to nothing.

I dont see how getting rid of castro and montero who have replacements already on the team or almost ready would be a bad thing when that money could be spent on a big OF bat or a TOR starter!

its like im trading in 2 used cars for a new car
