did starlin [expletive] up effort wise or something that would even slightly explain a benching suddenly (as opposed to just being bad, which the other guys in the lineup have also been)?

Maddon said they had a meeting in his office and he decided to give him a day off.

Geez, I read something about the White Sox now being buyers and I thought that sounded ridiculous. Then I looked up the wild card standings and noticed that the Sox are only 1 game farther from the playoffs (3.5 gb) than the Cubs are (2.5 gb)

What? They're 6.5 back. LA and Houston are the 1st, Minnesota is the 2nd, 3 games behind then, and the Sox are another 3.5 behind the Twins Edited by DiamondMind

Being in the AL must be nice.

Of WC1, yes. But they're only 3.5 behind the Twins for WC2 (albeit with 3 other teams in between them).

#Cubs manager Joe Maddon says he told Starlin Castro last night: "Listen, you're not getting traded. Just relax and play."

ugh ok this would be a little bit more of a direct lie if he were being traded so yeah. that's annoying.

Man way too many people (I'm mostly referring to twitter) are acting like this Castro stuff is actually trade related

what?

what more of an explanation do you need other than Castro has played almost every game and been the worst of the group?

Nothing effort wise. He did have a bad game - struck out looking with a runner on 3rd and 1 out and bobbled a double play ball and only got one out, but nothing effort related. He was out early on Monday with the coaches and got 3 hits that night, and not that it cancels out his horrific season, but I thought it was interesting Maddon seemed to reach his tipping point the next game. I figured he was getting traded.

it's a throwaway quote to answer the question. it's not any sort of evidence that castro isn't actually being traded.

what the hell else would he say besides "he needed a day off?"

the more direct "i told him he's not getting traded" thing is a little more pointed though. don't think he'd say that if that's what was going on.

Because swinging a bat is the same as learning a new offensive playbook. C'mon Joe.
