That's more reasonable. I'd still be really, really surprised if they didn't grab a SP. Even a back-end type.

I'm expecting perhaps a non closer reliever and Will Venable type move. So, not literally nothing, but pretty close.

I'd be shocked if they leave the revolving door in the fifth spot. I'd expect that much sooner than a reliever

The Cubs aren't that good and they're probably not making the playoffs, even if they do make the playoffs, they have little chance of doing anything. Giving up anything for a rental when this is the case isn't very smart.

These statements are all wrong and/or silly.

But say we were to acquire a rental to make our team better, thus improving our chances of not only making the playoffs, but doing something when we get there? In this strictly hypothetical scenario, would you be cool with it? Or would it just [expletive] up your plans of being sad and angry until Spring Training when you can begin preparations to be sad and angry next summer?

This is good snark.

There are so many starting pitchers available who are better than Beeler/Wada, so not only would I be upset, I would be stunned if we don't acquire a starting pitcher. Even if we continue to play poorly before the deadline, there's still 7 games left against the Giants. Admitting defeat before those games is silliness.

Truthfully, it's pent up frustration toward people- not posters, but the living, breathing, whining human beings I encounter in my day to day life (believe it or not, I have one, kind of,) who have the same woeful attitude toward this team going into the home stretch as they did when we had Justin [expletive] Germano at the front of our rotation. We may not look like champions at this time, but that doesn't mean that folks have to act like a bunch of pissy emo kids who refuse to let themselves enjoy the ground floor of what could be one hell of an era. And if that means gamble away a decent prospect or two for a rental, then I'm ok with it. And I trust that our FO won't go overboard.

Man, trust me, you don't have to explain it; most Cubs fans are awful. The vacation I was on was a family reunion of sorts and most of the family members there are Cubs fans and I love them but holy hell, most of them are the absolute worst when it comes to the Cubs. Everything is all doom and gloom and fan self-hatred.

Interesting deal for the Nats. That's probably burning the bridge with Storen's future in some respects, although they needed to add pen depth this year. The pen should be fine for the playoffs - I expect Joe Ross to come back up and go to the pen (or he could take the 5th job from say, Fister, and move to the pen playoff time). I mean ... they get Papelbon at 11 mil next year, which is ... eh ... but it saves them some, and they got money to go along for this year in the trade. Leaving aside hurt feelings with Storen, it's a good move.

A bit surprised the Angels added two lefty outfielders, and Victorino, but okay. It didn't cost much.

Glad Cubs didn't force the issue on Zobrist. That simply wasn't worth it.

Not so much self hatred as it is bi-polar. everything's feast or famine with no in-between. And it changes at the drop of a hat. As I've said before, I envy these kids who can watch a baseball game without thinking of its attached implications.

See?

If Rizzo bounces back to being Rizzo and, like, one of Soler or Bryant starts hitting like expected things suddenly start looking very different. There's a lot of baseball left, but typically masochistic Cubs fans are convinced it's impossible that something like Rizzo just being Rizzo will happen.

But they're only a wild card contender and going from 0% to 6.25% chance at a WS isn't worth nearly as much as going from 6.25% to 12.5%

Acquiring the guy that served as the starting catcher for an eventual World Series team counts as nothing? Salty was a bit more highly regarded back then.

He was farting around in AAA for Texas 3 seasons after being acquired and installed as their starting catcher. He picked up 25 PAs over 2 months for Boston in 2010.
