The thought of a locked-in Baez (as unlikely as that may be) terrorizing the Cubs for the next 7+ years scares the [expletive] out of me.... But, damn...I think I'd have to roll the dice on dealing him + McKinney for Cueto + Chapman.

Mevlin Upton's contract is to blame for that. The Braves still got a solid prospect in Wisler (#41 in Fangraph's rankings) even though the Padres took on $56 million in salary for Upton and Kimbrel ($80 for those two - the $24 for Quentin and Maybin). The Braves would've had to give a lot more if the trade had been just Upton.

Not even sure I'd even want to extend Cueto. But I'd probably do the trade because I really want Chapman.

You know who wouldn't jump at it? The Reds.

 

Hard to determine the value since it was also a salary dump deal... but you could argue the best player the Braves got back for Kimbrel was Matt Wisler. McKinney is likely a much better prospect. And he'll probably also be MLB ready sometime next year, is a LF'er, and wouldn't ya know it, Marlon Byrd is a FA after this season and the Reds will need a LF'er.

 

They might not jump at just McKinney, but it likely wouldn't take much more than adding someone like Lake and/or Corey Black or something along those lines to get it done if I had to guess. As dominating as Chapman is, he only pitches 60 innings a year. A Top 50 prospect and some moderately useful filler should be more than enough for 1 1/2 years of Chapman. And McKinney might have a chance to be a Top 25 prospect by year's end if he starts hitting for some more power at AA, which I imagine he will before the year's over.

like some other posters said, I really dont want the cubs to trade some of the high ceiling bats in the division (like baez or even McKinney) because it WILL come back to haunt us for years.

As a total aside, I really liked what the Braves did with that Kimbrel trade. If they had just gotten Matt Wisler for Kimbrel alone ... I would've liked that. To get rid of Upton's contract in that deal, even factoring the contracts sent to the Braves (uh ... Maybin's deal? and uh ... Quentin? ... ) was just a nice win. Wisler feels like a mid-rotation arm who might even get a tinge beyond that. At worst, I'd be surprised if he couldn't be a late inning pen option. All in all, a nice move on the Braves.

 

It made sense for the Padres in the sense that they are going for it now, and to a certain minor extent, I thought their prospects were over-rated the last few years.
