Dunleavy staying for 3/14.4. Marc Stein hearing Jimmy leaning towards taking the 5/90 over a shorter deal.

At first i thought this was ridiculous, but I guess its 2 years with a partially guaranteed 3rd year. And if the cap is really going up as much as it is, its not a huge deal to pay him $4.8 mil

I still think we need to get a lot more athletic as a team and MDJ doesn't help us in this aspect. I'd be fine with him as a 6th man but I'd like a better starting SF.

Bulls sign Butler to 5Y/95M max deal with opt-out after 4 years, per Woj.

I thought the max was 5/90

I think I read something yesterday on RealGM about the salary cap unexpectedly being a million or so higher (which was finalized last night). 5/90 was based off the old estimate. That would probably explain it

Going back with the same team that hasn't been good enough for 5 years. Can't fault the moves, but at this point I'd rather change the team for the sake of change

I agree re: the Dunleavy signing, but Butler is good enough to justify whatever the Bulls can pay him.

Dunleavy has only been a Bull for 2 seasons.

Yeah, but he's basically the same dude as Marco Bellinelli and Kyle Korver.

Rose

Butler/Deng

Dunleavy/Korver

Boozer/Gasol

Noah

Backup PG Du Jour

Gibson

It's all basically the same constructed roster. A roster that isn't good enough to beat LeBron. Again, not that I blame them because it's kinda what they had to do.

That's some pretty flimsy comparison analysis bordering on hot taking.

I'm also assuming you just plain forgot about Mirotic, which is pretty damn big.

No. He wasn't necessary for the purposes of this discussion of the core players being the same for several years. Obviously, Mirotic, McDermott, Portis, and Snell being more than role players this year would completely change things.

Mirotic after a year of playing in the NBA should be a huge difference.

Saying something like "Butler/Deng" just has all kinds of things wrong with it. For one, the season Butler just had is arguably better than any Deng had during his time with the Bulls. Butler simply isn't just the + role player that Deng was. Gasol is better and more valuable than Boozer. The only pairing that kind of works is Korver to Dunleavy. You're basically just saying "Body B replaced Body A" when Butler, Gasol and Mirotic are pretty big upgrades over the players you're comparing them two (or, in Mirotic's case, just leaving him out altogether)

Yet, they still weren't good enough to beat a Cavs team missing Love and with a 50% Irving. I didn't mean to imply they were the exact same team, they are definitely more talented than 2010-11, but based on the competition improving the teams are basically lateral. It's the same general outline for a team.

Whatever the hell that is.

The Bulls aren't staying static; Butler is trending in the right direction. Mirotic is trending in the right direction. Broken record that it is, Rose showed that if he can stay healthy he's still a weapon. That's a tremendous core to have, and it's one that we've not yet seen them actually play at full strength or ability.

you mean the team that beat the best team in the nba twice in the final, with zero irving? this is not a solid argument

And just having a coach that doesn't burn them out entirely in stupid regular season games will end up being a huge boost. I liked Thibs, but I'm more than willing to see what a Bulls team entering the playoffs without being dead ass tired and hurt can do.

I just hope they get more 3 point shooting. They definitely need another shooter even if Dougie pans out. In today's NBA you can't build a team that's 28th in 3 point shooting and expect to win a title imo

And they already lost Brooks who was their best 3 point shooter percentage wise last yaar

You should probably just punt until Lebron retires or moves to the West.

Lebron should just pick a sub-.500 team every year to sign a 1-year deal with and see if he can get them a championship.

my hope is he'll eventually feel sorry for crushing our dreams and sign with us, put drose in a baby bjorn and win us a championship

"Trending..."

Butler is a good #2 to a title contender, Mirotic looks interesting but I question his ceiling and definitely needs to gain weight, Rose quit in the last playoff game, vanished for spurts, and clearly lost some burst. Noah's going to continue playing on one healthy knee. Pau had an amazing year last season but dealt with a ton of injuries and you're adding another year of wear and tear on his old body.

Hardly a 'tremendous core' but rather a deeply flawed group against the top dog of the conference.

I think playing the same or similar team over and over against Lebron won't do anyone much good. Barring another Love AND Kyrie injury, this team won't get past Cleveland for the foreseeable future.
