If we win today, that's the fastest we've gotten to 20 wins since 2009, which started 20-14. The 2008 team started 20-15.

It's stuck to me how many "last time we were good" stats are from 2009 because I had largely relegated that season to the nightmare corners of my memory. Then I remember that it was just the year after an amazing season, so of course some of that would carry over, plus it ended up just being a "normal" bad season as opposed to what was to come. Before the dark times. Before...the Empire.

I remembered (incorrectly) going to the first game of the May series in St. Louis and the Cubs record was 21-14 on the scoreboard. It was actually 21-15.

Hell it wasn't even that "bad" of a season. They had a shitty August/Sept IIRC, but they won as many games as the 06 Cardinals and only 2 fewer than the 07 team. They were in first place in early August.

I was thinking the same thing looking over the numbers...until I got to that they finished the season 11.5 games out. The Cardinals just rocked it that year; Pujols had maybe his second best season. Yikes.

Actually, they didn't finish the season 11.5 games out, but they were 11.5 games out in early September. Basically a month after they had a share of 1st.

Oh yeah; 7.5. Misread that; 11.5 was the furthest they were behind, on September 9th.

They also followed up one of their 2 5-game winning streaks with an 8 game losing streak.

And they gave up 13 walkoff losses??! Alright, I take it back; it was the nut punch of a season I initially remembered it as.

Yeah, didn't we go like a month where we either stayed the same or lost ground every day?

ETA: On August 3rd we beat Cincy to improve to 56-48 and pull into a 1st place tie with STL(Percentage point ahead actually) Over the next 37 days we either lost ground or stayed the same every single day, going 15-19 in the process and winding up 11.5 out.

Things I barely remembered - The 08 team had a 6 game losing streak in late August/early Sept. Now that I think about it, I vaguely remember the NSBB freak outs...especially in the game threads.

I had also forgotten that they got swept at Comiskey. Didn't forget the sweep to Tampa, though.

Oh man, now I remember a LOT of ranting about that. It was maddening.

Oh, absolutely. There was a bunch of 'we peaked too soon' type stuff. I'm sure I got involved in it at some point even though I don't remember ever worrying about the 08 team right up until the bitter end.

Short answer: we were good, then went on a seemingly endless losing streak shortly after Aramis went down. We managed to claw our way into a 1st place tie in August, then immediately hit a downward spiral, which would last about 4 years.

We can all blame me for 2009. Samm Levine always tweeted Cubs Win!! Cubs Win!! after wins, and on July 29, 2009 that particular win must have put the Cubs in first place , because I replied with something about being in first place and he DM'd me "Dude, don't jinx it!!" The rest, as they say, is history.

EDIT -

I just looked it up and that win actually only put them 1/2 game out at the time, so it looks like I'm an even bigger dope.

I was at that game. Randy Wells pitched maybe his best game as a Cub and we won 12-0. Fun day.
