Also, I hate myself for even saying this.... Brian Wilson on a minor league deal? He throws a lot of cutters.... He still had a good K/9 rate last year. I'll see myself out

Wondering what it would take to pillage the Phils for Pap and Hamels. Salary relief and?

Considering they want the world for Hamels alone, probably the moon on top of that.

But did they know just how awful they'd be? They have a bottom of the barrel big league team and BP ranked their farm system #20. They might be willing to budge for something closer to a moon or two.

Back in the winter, Pap to the Brewers was supposedly a done deal, then it fell apart. Do we know what the Phillies were supposed to get and why it fell apart?

Signed.Take a flyer on Wilson or Balfour as well.

Not a huge fan of trading assets away this season for bullpen help but the Cubs have more enough in the war chest to go get Soriano.

Soriano is not an amazing reliever anymore, and I hope those of you saying we should get him know that he will cost a lot to be very average. He was worth 0.7 fWAR last year. He was of equal value with guys like Zach Putnam, Casey Fein, Fernando Salas, and Ryan Webb, to name a few. He is not in great company like he was several years ago. Not to mention his 2nd half ERA to close out the year last year was 6.48. He was not reliable.

But he's probably going to ask to be paid like he is. Soriano is a bad investment at what he's likely going to ask for, and with Boras as his agent I can't see him settling for what he's actually worth (~$4-$5 million at best). An upgrade over Schlitter? Probably, but so is my dead grandfather (Schlitter is the worst). But he's simply just another middle reliever now. He is no longer special, so don't expect him to be some sort of savior of the bullpen if he were to get hired.

I don't know; the 5 ER he's given up have been in 2/7 games. Other than that, I'll take his 0/10 BB/K and 1.05 WHiP through 6.2 IP. And looking at the future prognosis of the Brewers, we should be able to get him for Junior Lake, a middling A prospect, and an envelope full of cash.

That's how relievers work.

-We're at a position where extra wins are the most valuable.

-We're at a point where wins are the most costly to acquire.

-All he costs is money.

-Isn't WAR for relievers pretty shitty?

-2nd half ERA??

I'm not looking at Soriano as a savior. I'm not looking for him to displace Rondon as closer. I'm looking at him to get Schlitter sent back to Iowa.

If he's worth one win this year and ends up with a $8M contract, that's not too far from the going rate.

It's the "going rate" for multi-year deals signed in a liquid market. This is a damn near empty market at a 1 year deal.

I may be distracted this morning...what point are you trying to make about the cost?

Correct on all accounts.

That said, Soriano looks to be a decent bet to provide the type of production I'm expecting from Motte this year. If Soriano is $3-5M for this year, sure, go for it. But if he's really still looking for something like $10M, there are much better options out there. Hell, I'd even rather take on Papelbon's contract at that price (even if that means getting stuck with his option).

that if we accept 8M/WAR to be fair market value for the '14-'15 offseason, then fair market value for a 1 year deal in-season should be north of 8M
