I was curious as to how Russell was grading out at SS so far based on the metrics.

So far, UZR/150 of 6.0. Among qualified MLB SS, that would rank 7th, just ahead of Gregorius and behind Hechavarria, Ahmed, Hardy, Simmons, Alcides Escobar, and Crawford.

For reference, he was at 12.8 at 2B, first by a wide margin.

Oh, and just to remind us that things get silly at these sample sizes, Coghlan has a UZR/150 of 27.8 in his 52 innings at 2B.

Russell's UZR/150 is now at 12.4 in 227.2 innings at short.

Which would put him 6th in baseball among dudes with 200+ innings at SS. Not bad.

I fully cop to being wrong when I said Russell was far from a sure thing to be a better SS than Castro (when I argued that it wasn't worth switching their positions a few months back).

You were the one I was arguing with about Bryant early in the year. Who did I have the big argument with about Russell in the spring?

Russell was hitting ninth for the Cubs in an NL vs. NL game, making him the first position player ever to start such a game in the nine-hole and hit two homers. In all-NL games in history, there have been 34 starters with at least two homers (baseball-reference.com has the list with several real fun names), but they were all pitchers. The last time it happened was Micah Owings, who did so back in 2007.

If Baez can clean up some of the routine stuff (basing this moreso off of minor league sample size), I still wonder if we might be better with him at short and Russell at 2nd in the future. Russell's definitely good at short (and the best option at the current moment), but every once in awhile the arm looks a little too average and I remember how it was hidden perfectly at 2nd.

Then again it looks like Javy has a chance to be just as valuable playing all over the place, so that's fun too.

Overheard some guy at Starbucks saying to some other guy at Starbucks that Addison Russell is 'nothing but Darwin Barney who can hit a little.' True as that may be (though hopefully he ultimately becomes Darwin Barney who can hit a lot,) the fact that it was meant as a disparaging remark was absolutely baffling.

That might have made sense 3 months ago when Russell's OPS was in the mid 600s.

Wouldn't he just be Darwin Barney then?

Russell's UZR/150 at short is now 16.4, which is second in MLB for players with as many innings as Russell's 323 at short. He's also at 4 DRS, which would rank 4th in MLB on a per-inning basis.

He wasn't supposed to be nearly this good defensively, was he?

I wouldn't go that far.

He was supposed to be very good, albeit with some flaws (his arm is apparently one of them). But a lot of prospects have that said about them and don't end up being that good (Kyle likes to bring this up a lot). You might be remembering him being questioned on that account.

But for the most part I'd say the expectations of him/reports defensively were overall very positive.

man, why is Brett Taylor such a gomer? his cringey clickbait headlines preclude me from ever wanting to wade into his website anymore; i'm just not ever mentally prepared to suffer through his fangirling creepiness

"watching this EPIC Addison Russell fielding supercut gave me ALL OF THE FEELS. just, whoa. #slickD"
