They used to have more of a sense of humor.

yes, very true

isn't that representative of the internet as a whole?

Could be. I dunno enough about some of the "popular" sites. If anything its a reflection of a society as whole. George Carlin (one of my intellectual heroes) pointed this out a long time ago: as a society we need to lighten up. In other words, sit back and enjoy and the show and stop worrying about little stuff.

I'm seeing Dave Kingman revisited at the plate. Exceptional power, strike outs a lot and big swing. I can live with 40+ HR and .280. But he does have a good idea of the strike zone. Kong would hack at nearly everything. Always remember the HR Kingman hit over Waveland to around the 3rd house on a bounce.

both of which kingman achieved precisely once in his 16 year MLB career.

his bWAR was 17.3, which means that over the course of his career he was barely over a 1 win player. needless to say, we'll all be a little disappointed if bryant turns into that.

Going way, way back to when I was a kid, Pete Incavigila was maybe one of the the first really hyped prospects I can remember. He completely mashed at OK ST. and came right up without minor league experience. Edited by CubinNY

Man, yesterday did weird things to people.

No, I seriously doubt the whole of "the internet" is less funny now.

This is actually a good example. There's less thought involved in comments. No nuance.

My point is things are less often mean, but funny, and instead more often not only mean, but cruel. The twitter crusades against certain people, for example. The comments on twitter and instagram, esp to female celebrities. Gamergate.

Sites like deadspin used to be popular mostly bc they were funny. FJM was similar. Some of it was mean, but if they had just ripped joe Morgan and these idiot writers without humor, it wouldn't have had the following it did. It seems like more sites can be wildly popular just by being mean.

I'm not suggesting this is a new thing. But that's the trend I'm seeing. Maybe funny is being drowned out by the popularity of stuff that is just mean for the sake of being mean.

But seriously, to me that rings about as true people who bemoan negative news stories like they think the world has never been more evil or worse off or who knows what. So some sites that used to be more funny changed their tone or their focus; so what? Staffs change, focuses change with outlets like that...the scope of sites available out there has never been more huge or more varied. Finding writing that's "just" funny isn't something that's harder to do now than any point in the past; it's the exact opposite. Just because FJM stopped years ago or Deadspin shifted it's content output doesn't mean there's now mean that the internet's humor quotient or whatever has simply decreased without anything to different to come along to fill that role. Plus bemoaning things for being cruel and then pointing to FJM and older Deadspin as something different seems pretty...faulty. Maybe your tastes have simply changed, because those sites from day one tore into people. Saying they were just the right amount of mean seems like a pretty tenuous thing to long for when odds are if FJM was still going you'd probably just now think was too cruel, too because your sense of humor has changed. FJM was funny. It's the same here. When people mocked each other here, it used to be funny.

I still like things that are funny. And I still think things that are funny but mean are funny. People should concentrate on trying to be more funny.

lmaooooooooooooooo rizzo

CHICAGO (CBS) — Nothing has shocked Kris Bryant more than the party atmosphere he was witness to after his first successful day with the Cubs. The Anthony Rizzo disco was turned on full blast Saturday after the team’s first win with Bryant aboard.

Rizzo started the new culture of celebrations — featuring blasting music, disco light shows and smoke bombing — last season after wins. By the time the media is allowed into the clubhouse, there are no traces of the electric party that lasts five to eight minutes after Cub victories at home.

Bryant, who has had a whirlwind three days since his call-up, was in complete shock by the Rizzo bash Saturday after an extra-inning win against the Padres.

“Coming into the clubhouse, I saw smoke,” Bryant explained Sunday. “The (house) lights were turned off, and flashing lights were everywhere. (I said to myself) ‘What’s going on here?’ It kind of caught me off guard, but it was super fun. Anthony said to me afterward, ‘That was fun, wasn’t it?’ Yeah, I said, ‘That was a whole lot of fun!’ I sure hope to be partying in the disco clubhouse a lot this year.”

Saturday a beautiful day all around for Bryant, who was on base five times with two hits and three walks. His first major league base hit came in the fifth inning off of Tyler Ross.

“That was a pretty special day for me,” Bryant said. “All around, the team coming back from that ninth inning (when the Padres scored four runs), showing resilient play. That was a pretty fun win to be a part of.”

After a rough first game when he struck out three times in his major league debut, Bryant saw 35 pitches in his second game while showing good base running and fielding skills.

“I think I got out of my zone the first day,” he said. “I was a little anxious. I told myself to settle down a bit. I got some pitches to hit. It was a pretty good day all around for me.”

In my mind, Rizzo is the only one that participates in any way.

The idea of all the other guys sort of begrudgingly getting involved just enough so that Rizzo doesn't suspect how stupid they all think it is makes me chuckle.
