Apparently the NCAA Head of Officiating claims the ball could have gone in. I can't believe they allowed a tournament game to be decided on a very questionable goaltend of a 3 point shot.

SMU played a very, very dumb game down the stretch. They may have been screwed on the goal-tend call, but they set themselves up for it with a really, really bad turnover, and that kid needed to be smarter about keeping his hand below the cylinder. And did Brown have a timeout to use?

UCLA is the most hate-able low seed I can recall.

I think I remember glancing at the bottom line as SMU was bringing it up on their last possession and saw that they had several (I think 4) timeouts left. Perhaps they were trying to catch UCLA off guard because it seemed like a lot of guys were expecting a replay. They still probably should have called a TO once they brought it up and UCLA was in position.

For sure. Plus the kids were all going nuts over the goal tend call. Why not call TO and give them a chance to regain their composure?

Maybe Larry Brown was channeling his inner Dusty Baker there.

That went through my mind as well.

Ref who made the call was the outside official; maybe 25 feet away.

Aren't most calls reviewable under a minute? I'm assuming this wasn't?

Apparently goal tend calls are not because they are based on individual judgment. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me inasmuch as any call is based on some level of individual judgment...but ok.

PS: Thad Motta needs a shave.

That ball had no chance of going in; its not a golf ball with backspin. It was past the rim.

It had no chance of going in, but it was almost certainly touching the rim. He changed the trajectory of the miss by grabbing it above the cylinder.

I think it's more a matter of "now what?" Who do you award possession too if you wave off a goaltend. UCLA was pretty clearly getting the loose ball, but do you go off of that when the whistle already blew? Do you go to the arrow?

Just occurred to me...

IIRC, you go with the arrow in a dead-ball situation like that.

Harvard-UNC got good in a hurry. 3 point game with 6 left.

Harvard had a couple decent looks for the win.

I can't believe how much pushing off the offensive players are getting away with, especially as they go up for shots. Lots of uncalled forearm shivers being delivered.

Agreed, saw a lot of that today.
