Source confirms #Cubs to get Fowler from Astros for Valbuena and Straily

Now we KNOW it's for real

It's not really Valbuena, it's Brett Jackson.

Valbuena going with Straily per Jeff Passan.

As someone who has an irrational hatred of Valbuena (not sure why), I have no problem with this trade.

Trading Valbuena hurts my soul

More or less than tipping on haircuts?

I don't think this really makes us better. On the other hand, trading infielders not named Starlin Castro makes it more likely he sticks around for the long haul. Yay.

So, the Cubs have significantly improved C, CF, RF (Soler all year). They should get improvement at 3B with Bryant. The bench shouldn't be a stinking morass of sub-.600 OPS for 20% of the team at bats. One of Javy, Arismendy or LaStella should emerge as a positive contributor at second base.

I think they're going to score a surprising number of runs this year.

It's trading from an area that would be a surplus by midseason to help an area that would have had a hole all season.

That said, I really don't like trading Valbuena.

#cubs plan to play Olt, LaStella maybe Alcantara at 3b until Bryant is ready

This better not mean I have to see Mike Olt in a major league uniform again

who knows if he's just guessing or if he actually got this information from someone

I'm at the point where I'd be relieved if we got replacement-level value in aggregate from 2b next year. I fear worse.

Valbuena was gonna have to go if they were gonna put Bryant at 3B...so I guess a Valbuena trade was pretty inevitable?

i'm not sure if that was necessarily their intent if they wouldn't have had to give him up

They still have Castro, Baez, Alcantara, LaStella, Bryant and Russell for three spots.

@Buster_ESPN

Possible CHC lineup by May 1: CF Fowler, LF Coghlan, 1B Rizzo, SS Castro, C Montero, 3B Bryant, RF Soler, 2B La Stella.

@sethrauch

@Buster_ESPN So you think Baez starts the year in AAA? Not unreasonable to assume.

@Buster_ESPN

@sethrauch Yes, I do.
