If you look at Banedon gif, you see that he catches with both hands. Shields knocks it loose (contact point #1) and Bryant regains possession by grasping it with two hands, then advances his arm to stretch for the goal line .

COMPLETED OR INTERCEPTED PASS

Article 3 Completed or Intercepted Pass. A player who makes a catch may advance the ball. A forward pass is complete

(by the offense) or intercepted (by the defense) if a player, who is inbounds:

(a) secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground; and

(b) touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands; and

© maintains control of the ball long enough, after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, to enable him to perform any act

common to the game (i.e., maintaining control long enough to pitch it, pass it, advance with it, or avoid or ward off an

opponent, etc.).

Note 1: It is not necessary that he commit such an act, provided that he maintains control of the ball long enough to do so.

Note 2: If a player has control of the ball, a slight movement of the ball will not be considered a loss of possession. He must

lose control of the ball in order to rule that there has been a loss of possession.

If the player loses the ball while simultaneously touching both feet or any part of his body to the ground, it is not a catch.

The biggest problem with Banedon's gif is that it is in slow motion. You can slow it down even more and make it appear as though he had possession for 5 minutes if you slow it down enough, but the full speed version shows that it's all one motion of making the catch while falling down. At no time during that catch did he maintain control of himself. He leaped up high in the air, off balance, and proceeded to stumble his way to the ground where he unfortunately lost control of the ball when it made contact with the ground.

While he did an amazing job of securing the ball while falling down, he definitely needed to complete the process by maintaining possession completely through the fall. That didn't happen.

My gif was merely posted to show that the ball actually made contact with the ground...contrary to what minnesotacubsfan was saying.

So talking about stupid NFL rules, the requirement for all players to be available for media interviews has been an issue as all have known for over 3 years for Marshawn Lynch. He was fined last year but it was "suspended". Then this year the fine was reinstated and another fine was tacked on making it a fine of $100k because he wouldn't talk to national media (local guys usually can get something but respect him enough to ease off after a tough game).

Anyhow, despite your feelings on the matter if the fine was reasonable or not this came out over the weekend...

This to me is so wrong on so many levels that makes me wish this writer was on the field so Marshawn can go beast mode on him. Talk about your perfect example of media making it about themselves....sheesh

No thoughts on this??? (Trying to stop the continued discussion that has eclipsed any other discussion....)

Speaking as a journalist, the media guy bragging about getting Lynch fined looks like an idiot. However, Lynch refusing to answer questions is more than a little silly - though his ways around answering anything have been rather humorous.

As for the fine itself, it's not that much to ask an athlete to give media members a few quotes to pass along to fans. But any media members pursuing fines for players because they don't want to give comments is ridiculous.

I get the implication, it APPEARS the ball could have touched the ground. But in the first gif, the pile-on blocks a clear view (and the ref has a better view calling it a catch) and the second pic doesnt show the ball all the way to the ground. for all I know, the motion of Bryants hand shifting from hitting the ground could be enough to dislodge it. If those are the views the refs had to review the play, I just dont see how they could overturn it.

Besides, three posts up, it shows him having possession with his forearm on the ground. He was down at that point, or should have been.

I'm really not batchit crazy, just stubborn.

Given the way he was holding the ball and the way he landed, it's pretty much impossible for it not to have at least grazed the ground. And I'm not sure how the second photo isn't completely conclusive that the ball is on the ground.

He did not show possession, though, that's the whole point. For a receiver to show clear possession, he has to complete 1 of 2 scenarios:

1) have 2 feet down and exhibit a football move (and continue holding on to the football during said football move) - this establishes you as a runner and not a receiver

or

2) if he's falling when he makes the catch, he must control the ball all the way through landing on the ground

If you want to argue that sticking his arm out was a football move (sketchy in that scenario), Dez did not control the ball throughout that football move and it hit the ground, so the football move becomes irrelevant. Otherwise, the ball came loose before he was fully on the ground and, thus, he didn't complete the process of the catch. Simply touching a body part on the ground is irrelevant if you haven't established yourself as a runner and he hadn't done that yet.

I keep watching these videos on my phone and it's impossible for me to make it out. Regardless, it's such a moot point anyways, the game is over. Sucks what could have been a great play didn't end that way, and I'm over it.

I don't think it's that, I just hate watching the Packers win

@HolderStephen

I’m not making this up: #Colts offensive tackle Xavier Nixon missed the flight and is listed as out for tomorrow, team reports.

Why does it matter if one particular guy gives quotes to the media or not? Fans very rarely give a [expletive] what most players say right after a game. Is anything really better if he gives a couple canned responses? It's a ridiculous fine.

The quotes can add some good depth to your story and gives fans more info than simply regurgitating what happened on the field. I can't prove anything here, but I'd wager that more fans than not want to get reactions from the players they follow about a big game or a big call (hearing from Dez on last week's call for instance) even if the answers are just canned and meaningless.

Personally, I agree more with you. I don't really care if a player speaks after the game or not because I know 99% of the time, you're just going to get meaningless canned responses. But bosses have expectations, a lot of fans have expectations and 5-10 minutes isn't exactly asking a ton. That said, if the NFL dropped the fines for media availability tomorrow, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I'm guessing the fans are more understanding than you give them credit: http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/2014/story/_/id/12167617/nfl-playoffs-petition-wants-nfl-revise-media-policy-stop-harassing-marshawn-lynch-seattle-seahawks

Obviously part of the reason Marshawn Lynch makes nearly 10mln a year playing football is the interest thew games draw and part of that is the interest the players themselves draw. So the NFL (and I would guess every league) has rules that players have to be available to be interviewed. All this rolls into how much revenue the league can generate and then into how much the players make.

Lynch makes himself more interesting by refusing to be available and thus m,ore in demand. I cant recall seeing Demarco Murray interviewed much this year despite being the years best runner. I dont get how Lynch cant understand that part of making $7mln a year as an NFL player is a requirement to answer a few questions a week from the media.

Yeah you really needed to go for it on 4th down there GB. 3 points is not going to cut it. IMO terrible decision by McCarthy
