Mike Garafolo @MikeGarafolo

Doug Marrone found a gig: assistant head coach/O Line in Jacksonville.

That is just amazing

At the time, I thought it was a smart move. In hindsight, unless you're more proven or you know for sure you have another move secured, you can't do this.

I thought he had the Jets job locked up.

That was the most effective media hatchet job I've seen in quite some time.

@timkawakami

I'll repeat: Harbaugh and Fangio are two of the best coaches in the world and both of them wanted to get the hell away from the 49ers ASAP.

I'm glad we could take them both from a team I don't like and distribute them to my 2 favorite football teams

If not the Jets job, one of his best friends (at least from what I read on Twitter and heard on the Score) got the Bears GM job and interviewed him but still didn't give him an offer.

This guy had the story well before La Canfora (and kind of totally in teh face of what La Canfora was reporting/predicting yesterday)

Yeah, and apparently he had the Pace hire earlier too...

He tweeted after that that it was just a joke, that he's actually friends with him.

Former #Bears GM Phil Emery is at the Senior Bowl

Just sitting there in the crowd frowning and eating popcorn for some reason.

Is it me or did this guy not actually report that they hired Fangio? It seems like he kept saying he thinks it could happen despite other people saying it won't. But that is not the same thing as saying it happened.

He didn't really report it, but it seems like he was a lot more connected in regards to Fangio and the Bears than others, especially when LaCanfora was saying last night that Washington would hire Fangio this morning...but it's all a matter of interpretation.

Anyone going to watch Real Sports tonight about the 85 Bears?

Sad to see McMahon in the state he is in.

I'm not a fan of Ditka but he's dead on.

I worshiped those guys. I wanted to be Dent; used to pretend I was him while playing tackle in the snow with my friends growing up. And seeing Jimmy like that is awful.

I appreciate Ditka's continuing advocacy for former players, but let's be honest here: he was undoubtedly pushing seriously injured guys to play through their ailments. I realize we are more evolved and knowledgeable in the present day, but I can't believe these guys were completely ignorant of the potential consequences.

He knew and he allowed them to play but they ultimately accepted that risk of present and future consequences. With that said, given the financial benefits rewarded to ownership, I think there should be a greater distribution of wealth to players experiencing trauma caused by football. There's a reason why the NFL has lied and covered up the concussion issue and it's not solely about future involvement. They know they stand to lose allot if they are deemed to compensate future suffering, which they should.

I doubt Mike Ditka was all that aware of potential future consequences for players when he was coaching.

Certainly not at the level we are today, but as a former player he must have known to some extent what the game does to your body over the long run.

#Bears GM Ryan Pace met with scouting staff last night in Mobile and has departed. His biggest priority right now is helping Fox fill staff.

With the tendency for teams to always hire the antithesis of the guy they just fired, it's interesting to note just how much Pace differs from Emery on the college scouting side of things. For one, Pace was a pro personnel guy and Emery came from the college scouting side. Unlike Emery, Pace seems to be distancing himself from the college scouting aspect of the job. As far as I can tell, Pace seems to be putting all the college scouting responsibilities on the guys that worked the job under Emery.

Yeah, but everybody knew and thought nothing of the fact that you'd need a replacement hip and new knees. They figured all old people got that stuff eventually anyway.

Didn't he just hire his buddy from NO to take over that side and report to him? Plus, IIRC, he has a special method and metrics they will be using to evaluate talent, but it was too late to implement it by the time he got hired.

The guy he hired was from the pro personnel side. He replaced Emery's pro personnel guys but officially at least, the Bears still have the same guys running the college scouting side.

Got it. Wonder if his assessment is that Emery and his micromanagement of that side was problematic, rather than the skill level of the scouts.

Not like there are going to be guys on the college scouting side available (who aren't currently unemployed) until after the draft.
