The Fangraphs depth chart projections now have Montero as our second most valuable position player behind Rizzo at 2.3 WAR in 383 PAs (the catching total at 3.4).

3 games behind the Giants for a playoff spot and 0.2 behind the Brewers for third.

For the past three years, the Cubs have essentially treated the major-league roster like an afterthought, using Band-Aids and placeholders while building for the future. But they will need depth and versatility to make it through 162 games and play deep into October. For now, that means Montero and Castillo.

“Catching’s really thin in the game,” Epstein said. “It’s really hard to put yourself in a position where you’re vulnerable to one injury and you don’t have an adequate solution. Or where your catching isn’t as multi-dimensional as you want it to be. These two guys complement each other extremely well. I think the whole will be greater than the sum of the parts.

“The move today was a recognition of the fundamental importance of catching to a good team – to a team that wants to contend.”

Gosh it would be so much fun to believe in Theo Epstein again.

Are the Rockies #1 now?

Yes, but it's all on pitch-framing.

Mejia is a very good prospect. He's got a great arm, and his stuff is pretty advanced for a kid that young. Certainly a legit top 20 guy in a very good system, and someone the Cubs paid a good sized bonus points to. In what world is that not a very good prospect?

In a world where there are less than 500 prospects rated as very good

Mejia has good stuff and is projectable with some pretty good results, he's not in some people's Top 20 for no reason. He's also a pitcher, very raw, and no less than 4 years from the major leagues. Considering the other guy they gave up is a slightly warmed body(24 yo reliever in A+ with good results), it's hardly paying a premium in a trade for Montero.

It is if you believe Montero's contract pushes him into negative value.

Well then stop believing that. Problem solved.

But now we're missing the 3M in projected surplus value Mejia would provide us. 14 years of team control for 3. Unbelievable. This is how we got into the mess we're in now.

he's borderline to even be called a prospect, let alone a very good one.

That's absolutely absurd, sorry. Just not even close to meshing with the facts.

a raw 20 year old pitcher who hasn't pitched above rookie ball is not a very good prospect. he might be a prospect. cj edwards and pierce johnson are barely "very good" prospects.

i mean, [expletive], if mejia is a very good prospect, vogelbach must be blue chip

He is in the sense that he weighs the same as Shaq.

This. Come on guys, Mejia is a nice piece to have but it's not much to give up for a significant upgrade. This platoon is going to be very good. I feel much better about doing this trade than I would have been giving 4years+/$60M+ to Martin.

Exactly. And Schwarber is racing towards the bigs. Its not unreasonable to think he will be at AAA by July and Wrigley by April 2016.

Theo has gone on record saying catchers need longer to develop in the minors and even when they break into the majors they should break in gradually learning under a mentor. He spent most of his first season in the farm system playing OF and DH. I expect him to spend the entire 2015 season in AA working on his catching, even if his bat outclasses the level.

That's perfect. Schwarber will be ready for MLB in 2018...right after Montero leaves as a FA. Welington is under contract until after 2018. So Montero/Castillo for the next 3 years, Schwarber/Castillo for 2018 and then Schwarber/random guy after that. :)

I realize Schwarbs needs to work on his defensive skills, but I just can't see holding that bat down beyond the 2016 ASB. Maybe, just maybe, he's at AAA until a September 2016 call-up. Kid just rakes.

I want to see him do it at AA before I get too invested. They said he was the most advanced bat in the draft, you'd expect him to come out raking.

You might be right and perhaps I am getting a bit too excited, but its hard to ignore how throughly he dominated each level he played at last season. It was Bryant-like.

Who cares, he won't be on the 2015 MLB club and its a team actually worth caring about.

There's still really good reason to care.

Yea but I'll be checking the minor league box score after the MLB one finally.

It's like a cool little side piece instead of my primary concern.
