The Scouts were huge at my schools until the Webelos level; I think that's when most kids could bow out and did. Very few stuck with it to go on to Boy Scouts, and those that did were pretty freakish. The Cub Scouts and Tiger Cubs were something seemingly everyone was made to do by their parents. Of course, this was still back in the early-mid 80's; seems like it had fallen off a lot in the 90's. Edited by Sammy Sofa

CUB Scouts? Is that like a Wrigley thing?

Think it's just a younger version of boy scouts

are you people serious?

i have never been involved in scouts or looked into the hierarchy in any way

think there was one kid in my grade school class who was a cub scout. he was a huge dork and picked his nose a lot. no boy scouts that i was aware of.

cubs scouts are the young ones, when parents forced you into it. Boy scouts are the weirdos that enjoyed it and chose to stay around and put an effort into it. We probably had close to half the boys in our class in cubs scouts, and had to wear the uniform a couple times a year.

this inspired me to search for that huge dork on facebook

he is still a huge dork 25 years later

and he apparently wrote a book about a female cyborg who gets a computer virus or something that threatens to kill her

looks like he got 8 of his friends to rate it on amazon

My boss is an ES and he's a total [expletive]

The few Eagle Scouts I knew were [expletive] terrifying. The Boy Scouts were dorks, but [expletive] those Eagle Scouts were all intensity and bottled up fury.

Same here. It's like they dedicated their lives to some made-up purpose and didn't bother trying to live it on their terms or search out any meaning for themselves. The result is a ruined, soulless man with no future other then trying to control others. There's a reason they tried to ban gays

They tried to ban the gays because they think it's what Jesus would do. Which is funny to me because they compromised, of course, and now there's a uber-Christian and conservative alternative to BSA that has popped up among mostly weirdo home school families.

Just think about those kids. They were too dorky for the Boy Scouts so their folks created them their own organization. No dork left behind.

And dammit I said I was done with the Bears and posting in game threads this year. And due to Thanksgiving and [expletive] relatives being at our house I will be forced to watch the game.

And how is Jesus not a made-up purpose again?

Skip right to weeblos and let 11 year old kids go out and camp and do other outdoorsy things and Boy Scouts will be legit. The ritual of rec center leather making and "nature" hikes pointing out what dandelions are is what breeds the weirdos.

You won't get an argument from me on that. But I didn't think that was what you meant.

Scouts is basically survival/military training for kids that starts out all fun and games and gradually gets more hardcore the longer you go.

Most of the kids I know who went all the way through Eagle scouts joined the actual military soon afterwards and excelled there. If that's your thing, more power to you.
