Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill said in a radio interview on SiriusXM Sunday that the team's goal is to sign Giancarlo Stanton to an extension prior to the Winter Meetings.

While there's little doubt the Marlins would love to lock up one of the best players in the game for the long haul, it's simply not likely to happen. A long-term deal for Stanton would surely require a commitment well over $200 million, which could easily more than double the biggest contract the team has ever handed out (Jose Reyes' $106 million deal). Stanton is under team control through 2016 but remains likely to be dealt at some point before the end of that season.

Good luck with that, Marlins.

No doubt that's lip service for the five Marlins fans. They have almost no shot to re-sign him (or intent to offer him anywhere near market value), and will almost certainly be fielding offers at the winter meetings.

Is there any concern with Stanton after taking that pitch to the face? That can really mess a guy up for a obvious reasons.

Right, I"m not so sure it's for the fans though. I think they are positioning themselves for negotiating trades.

"Hey, we're planning on resigning this guy, but we'll listen to what you are offering"

Per a tweet from the official Cubs handle, @Cubs, Wada is back for 2015 at $4MM with an additional $2MM available in incentives. Good depth signing, IMO.

Not sure how to feel

Wood has to be gone, right? It seems odd that they would sacrifice the ability to trade Wada over a million dollars.

I'd have to think so regarding Wood. I'm just surprised because I figured they'd hold out the 5th spot for our heap of AAAA guys. Adding Wada to that mix seems excessive, and giving 2 spots to that group would be disappointing.

ETA: I'd previously had Wood/Jaxon as insurance in case they didn't land a 2nd starter, I mean Wada could (hopefully)fill that role, but those guys were already on the roster.

Perhaps I'm being dense, but how did they sacrifice their ability to trade Wada?

Maybe they still can, his is a somewhat unique case so if he technically never reached free agency and it's actually a 1 year extension they may still have the right. Otherwise since he wasn't under contract or team control yet, one could also infer that he signed as a free agent, and can't be traded til midseason.

The other thing that makes this a bit better is that Arizona Phil says that Wada still has 2 options left. If they're able to keep them at Iowa if they like, that's a lot more palatable as a depth move since Turner and Doubront don't have options. It could also be an indicator that they're going to spend a good deal of cash this year if they're committing 4 million to a guy not guaranteed an MLB roster spot.

Wada has to approve of being sent down though.

Arrieta

Wood

Jackson

Wada

Hendricks

Turner

Doubront

Straily

I don't think it necessarily means anything other than that they like Wada. They could dump both Wood & Jackson, bring in two FA starters and still only have the one spot up for grabs between Hendricks and the other guys.

Or it may signal that they want to spend money on one FA pitcher and then an OF and a catcher. Too early to draw any conclusions, really.

Aramis Ramirez accepts his half of 2015 option. The @Brewers exercised the option last week.

Obviously the epitome of 20/20 hindsight, but it's super annoying that his contract basically lined up perfectly with the parade of crap (Valbuena excepted) that the Cubs ended up having to deal with at 3B.

obviously?

I think you'll find plenty of people here who thought Aramis' age coupled with his injury history vs. the expectations of the FO being able to find at least a capable platoon at 3B would mean the Cubs had a decent shot of at least matching his production for Milwaukee.
