In what I can honestly say is one of the worst twitter decisions I've ever heard of, Oscar's teammate Carlos Martinez posts a picture of the body on Twitter. Wtf?

did this actually happen? wtf?

People over on GRB brought it up.

I think he accidentally tweeted it because he removed it within a minute. Still not sure why anyone would want a picture of that. I know I wouldn't.

Man, this is incredibly depressing.

To try and lighten things up a bit; he did inspire maybe the greatest player graphic of all time:

Some twitter people were saying there's a cultural thing in some countries to share morgue photos as part of grief? No idea if anything like that is accurate.

This is so sad: Juan Perez saw a picture of his friend Oscar Taveras' body from the morgue midgame. Somehow composed himself to play.

Absolutely Terrible...

This is awful. Never want to see any young person pass this early, especially someone with such a bright future.

That being said, I'm sure the commissioner will award the Cards some sort of compensation pick that will end up being the next Pujols.

Hey maybe wait longer than 24 hours after Taveras died before making a dumb joke about the situation.

Really? No second thoughts before hitting "post?"

i said this before and i'll say it again, why are all these car accidents happening in the DR?

Most Latin, African and Asian countries have a frightening lack of traffic laws

On vacation in Jamaica taking the tour bus is much more frightening than any haunted house in America. I'd venture to guess the drivers in DR are similar.

Best description of the drivers in Jamaica is they go at a high rate of speed, pass up cars for absolutely no reason, and also have no fears of driving into oncoming traffic literally constantly. Also 2 cars drive side by the in the same narrow lane constantly..

Guys, cut him some slack. People deal with death in different ways. I had about a half dozen terrible jokes go through my head when I heard the news. That's just the way some of us are hardwired to react to these sorts of heavy, awkward situations -- we try to lighten the mood.

It was in poor taste and he shouldn't have said anything. I'm sure he realizes that now. Let's not all pile on.

I'm sure everyone had a bunch of sports/competition-related thoughts go through their head. It's not difficult to actually exercise some self-control.

I'd have double the posts on this board if you counted the ones I'd deleted before hitting submit.

waiting for the autopsy report

Being perfectly honest, that was one of my first thoughts given the organization's history. But hearing about wackadoodle drivers in Latin America does make it make a bit more sense.

When I was in India at age 14, we went on a 4-hour road trip from Delhi to the Taj Mahal. Halfway through, I asked to move from the front to the back of the van and have never sat in the front in India since. No seatbelts, cows have the right of way, traffic lights aren't enforced, as many cars as can fit into a lane normally do and scariest of all, cars will often pass on the other side of the road at the worst possible time, playing a game of chicken with oncoming traffic. After our car forced an oncoming truck to swerve into the opposite side within 10 feet of us, I had had enough.

Last night, I learned on Twitter that the Dominican Republic doesn't have seat belt laws and is lax on many other driving regulations to go along with the normal third world driving craziness.

"To the many fans who have already reached out with condolences, and to the many more who are in mourning, thank you for taking these players in, like they are one of your own. This level of care is what sets our fans apart."

I hope this doesn't come off as insensitive but, really Matheny?

Hahahaha, we had our honeymoon in jamaica back in april, and just the drive from the airport to our resort was so harrowing my wife had her eyes closed.

Eh; the whole organization and fanbase is in mourning and you're just reeling for things to say that aren't heartbreaking. You'd likely see nearly any team say something along those lines.

Plus it's not like that was the entire statement:

"I was asked last night to give some words regarding the tragic death of Oscar Taveras, but I just simply couldn't."

“First of all, it felt like a bad dream that could not be real, and when reality kicked in, my words didn't even seem to make sense. To say this is a horrible loss of a life ended too soon would be an understatement. To talk about the potential of his abilities seemed to be untimely. All I wanted to do was get the guys together and be with our baseball family. I know the hurt that comes along with buying into the brotherhood of a baseball team. That hurt is just as powerful as the joys that come with this life. Not to say it is even close to the depth of pain his true family is going through, but the pain itself is just as real. The ache is deep because the relationships were deep, and forged through time and trials.

“To the many fans who have already reached out with condolences, and to the many more who are in mourning, thank you for taking these players in, like they are one of your own. This level of care is what sets our fans apart.

“In my opinion, the word "love" is the most misused, and misunderstood word in the English language. It is not popular for men to use this word, and even less popular for athletes. But, there is not a more accurate word for how a group of men share a deep and genuine concern for each other. We loved Oscar, and he loved us. That is what a team does, that is what a family does. You will be missed, Oscar."

Looking back on the years we lived in Southeast Asia it's a miracle we were never in any kind of car wreck.

Not being able to handle a not vicious at all joke on a message board about someone that you have never met dying. Really? Can you people handle watching the evening news without crying?
