In Chicago, the best part of a World Series Game 7 is it moves the Cubs closer to an opportunity to provide clarity to the biggest move of their offseason.

Major-league sources say the Cubs, who have been in discussions this week with free-agent manager Joe Maddon, could have an answer by Friday. Either they will land Maddon, finding the perfect manager for their multiyear rebuilding mission, or they will have swung and missed, leaving them with a mess on their hands with incumbent Rick Renteria.

Maddon’s Chicago-based agent, Alan Nero, told the Sun-Times over the weekend that he expected clarity this week.

If that is the biggest move of the offseason this is going to be a hell of a depressing offseason.

Yeah, DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN probably doesn't know things about baseball so cut him some slack.

Decide for yourself if it means anything, but Joe Maddon's daughter Sarah is now following ESPN 1000 on Facebook:

I was looking for a version of this a while back with Richard Dreyfuss...it never occurred to me to look for a UHF one.

I disagree. Maddon is a move that will pay off in a big way long term. I'm willing to accept him as the biggest move.

You'll eat those words after we land Stanton for Almora and spare parts!

Your opinions on all most everything are exactly the opposite of mine. You are like the anti-CubinNY.

Singing Maddon would be fantastic, but unless he can also take the mound every five days they kind of really, really need some more starting pitching.

I'm trying to think of the level of player that would make Madden the biggest move and it doesn't excite me. Are we even getting a regular starter or top three SP if that were the case?

If Maddon were the biggest move, we wouldn't be getting a player north of Hank White importance.

Best realistic offseason scenario, in order of importance:

1. Sign Lester or Scherzer (I prefer the later, FWIW)

2. Sign Maddon / term. Renteria

3. Sign Morse or Markakis (I prefer the former on a two year deal with a mutual third year option)

EDIT: This scenario includes my bias against NL teams giving long-term deals to FA catchers in their 30's.

Ooh. Didn't think about that approach. Think of the budget savings from having the manager sing the national anthem and take me out to the ballgame.

Scratch item 3 and sign another starter. And trade for Miguel Montero.

I haven't had much interest in the big league team since Piniella and Dusty before him. I'm legit excited about Maddon. Let me have that, okay?

No. Basing your interest on the Q rating of a manager is terribly misguided. You haven't had much interest because the team has sucked and that is because they haven't had enough good baseball players. They need a lot more good baseball players. A celebrity manager won't change that.
