I've seen the home turf hurt both teams. Lately, seems like it hurts the opponents more. Should have built a dome and gone with turf.

or just gone with turf

which they can still do whenever they want and probably get it done within a bye week

I wish we could see this team on artificial turf more often

They do play well on it. Too bad it causes cancer.

Did you see that article about the soccer goalies?

Or spend the money necessary to actually properly maintain real grass

they have spent more than enough money on that field

that's not the problem

I think this makes me realize how really bad Soldier Field is. Been a lot of players slipping in the home games. It definitely doesn't seem like a fast track or help the home team as much as it should.

Which I totally don't understand. It's grass, the only way it's slippery is if it's like -20 out and it's frozen solid, so why in late summer?

It was soccer goalies specifically, sucking in ground up tires

part of it is allegedly an issue with the soil and the proximity to the water table or something (i dont know anything about these things, just throwing out terms i remember hearing)

part of it is that they have so many other events tearing up the field and they are constantly re-sodding it

Posted
Water table? That's total [expletive]. And If the native soil is really that awful then strip it out and replace it all.

It's the "other events" part that's likely the issue

It's not the native soil as much as the strips of sod they constantly have to replace. Those things just cannot be as sturdy as the permanent ground that maintains grass year round.

just wondering if you can explain why it's total [expletive]? guessing you know things about these things if you're saying that.

If the water table was really that high, when the building was rebuilt, how did they not diaphragm the field area to keep the water out? You can place building foundations in a high water table by using "piles", not as in mounds but as in columns that extend down into the muck a la Venice Italy. But how did they not protect the field? They had to of, and if the result was a very shallow soil layer or the inability to grow grass at all, then the very use of grass was a total compromise and [expletive].

That makes sense.

Could it just be a borderline situation, though? Like, yeah, it's do-able, but it's far from ideal?

Hence Soldier Fields "ideal" is turf. There are what, 32 nfl stadiums total? It's not like the build them everyday. And probably the single most important piece of it is the playing surface. And yet, the Parks dept screwed that up

Yeah, really freaky and sad. Something toxic got in the rubber I guess.

31.

And the most important thing is the club level.

The Parks dept didn't screw up the playing surface. The Bears insisting on grass over turf is what has screwed up the playing surface.

The Bears aren't the only NFL team not to have complete control over the installation of turf and its maintenance, right?

Really? I thought it was the Park district that insisted on it. So much confusion out there

Idk. As it were, my cousin is the principle in charge of the construction of the Vikings new stadium (and Colts). I should ask him

It has been reported on numerous occasions that the Bears have final say over the turf, and they have hesitated to go with artificial due to questions about player safety.

The Chicago Park District, which by contract pays for regularly resodding the field, also would pay for a change to an artificial surface, a move that would be cost-effective in the long run.

However, if a move to artificial surface were made, the Bears would be on the hook for a change to natural grass if they wanted to switch back. Switching from an artificial surface to grass would be costlier than making the transition from grass to artificial turf.
