Week 7: Dolphins (2-3) @ Bears (3-3) Noon, CBS/780

This crap can't be happening in week 7: http://thegamechicago.com/2014/10/20/week-7-bears-rewind-trestmans-system-showing-flaws/

- A 30-yard run by a quarterback on 4th-and-1 is usually a result of a defensive miscue and Trestman confirmed as much Monday.

“We had called a defense to stop the (quarterback) sneak with a check if they were in a (shot)gun to get out of it and we didn’t collectively get the check which accounted for the long run,” Trestman said.

Yes, unbelievably, the Bears were in a defense to stop the quarterback sneak with the quarterback standing in a shotgun formation.

So it’s not surprising that this was the result:

It’s worth noting that the Bears were in their base defense and the linebacker wearing the defensive radio was Darryl Sharpton, who was only playing in the nickel package. When D.J. Williams was on the field in base, the Bears were using hand signals to make the defensive calls.

But it’s tough to blame the 30-yard run on who was wearing the radio because the play occurred after the officials had reviewed the spot. Thus, there was a long period of time for the players to understand that if Ryan Tannehill was in the shotgun, they needed to be in a different defense.

How the check didn’t occur — especially coming out of a timeout — is really hard to comprehend. And it’s even harder to comprehend how missed defensive checks keep happening on fourth down. Remember how last season ended for the Bears?
