Started the other NHL thread, might as well start this one.

I don't see a lot of excitement for the season to start other than people saying it in relation to the Bears disappointing season to date. It's probably because nothing matters except health before the playoffs. Last year proved it, as the Hawks was sluggish at times during the regular season, only finished 3rd in the division and then turned up the gas when the playoffs started. In the end, they were basically an unlucky bounce away from winning their second straight Cup and 3rd in 5 seasons.

So fellow Hawks fans, what should we be excited about for the regular season? Maybe its the fact that barring a jump in the cap, this might be the final Hawks run for a guy like Sharp or Seabrook, meaning without a quick retooling we might take a step back after this season. Maybe hoping/looking forward to Teuvo forcing himself on the roster and becoming a key contributor to the team. Maybe its just about appreciating how you have at worst one of the 3 best teams in hockey and get to watch them play every other night.

Versteeg is out 3 weeks per Coach Q.

I like this team on paper this year better too. Don't expect them to win the presidents trophy, or even the Central. But I think in the end they take the Cup. Next year I hope the cap will move up to 74 million, but even so they will lose Sharp/ Seabrook and while it won't be as bad as summer of 2010 they might take a step back for a season.

DirecTV has Center Ice free til almost the end of the month. I'm assuming West Conference Finals at least, and winning the Cup should be a real possibility (what do odds look like?). Kings aren't as good as last year, I don't think. Blues are still the Blues.

Tough break for Versteeg. I was happy with the Hawks season last year. They and LA were clearly the class of the league by a wide margin and someone had to lose.

But we can't lose to them again. Anything short of the SC Final is a huge disappointment. And since they should roll anyone in the East, that means anything but the Cup is a disappointment.

i'm super pumped to watch hockey again, but yeah it really does feel like this is all a formality until the playoffs. i hate feeling that way because you never should as a sports fan, but as long as no one gets seriously injured this team will be fine and we're just coasting to a top-3 seed.

Really enjoyed the beatdown the Kings received last night in a bar FULL of Kings fans. Luckily, the sound was off for the lowering of the banner and the flashing of the hardware. Welcome back, Hawks! Hockey season actually begins tonight.
