They are a gimmick to make sure there is a "winner" and a "loser". Its about as random as having Toews and the Jamie Benn meeting at center ice and playing "rock scissors paper" for the extra point.

We played with pretty much 4 defensemen. Rundblad played 6 minutes. TVR played just short of 12 min.

I don't think anyone is worked up about them. I just don't like them and would prefer they just end in ties rather than awarding points based on a skills competition.
