If the Cubs were able to deal away Wood and Castillo to the Phillies for prospects that would save 7.785M this year. If they were able to eat half of Edwin's remaining 2/22 deal they could save 5.5M more this year. That means with the previously saved 13.285M, payroll only has to go up about 5M this year to land Shields, assuming 4/72. I don't see how they aren't all in on it.

I'm not so certain that we didn't calculate trading Wood and Castillo into whether or not we could afford the signings we already made, meaning it won't actually be extra money when we trade them.

Neither Welly or Wood would be long term money commitments. Welly could be a nice steal depending how how much (or how little) your org values pitch framing. Wood could be flipped if he rebounds back more towards 2013 level performance.

If we don't end up with either Shields or Hamels (for whatever reasons) I'd see if those two for Cliff Lee would work. Phillies would save about $17-18mm this year.
