At this point just tell him he's starting the season in AAA. Then give him a solid 6 months down there with consecutive months of success before he's brought back up.

I'm probably just trying to make excuses at this point but its possible he is working on a new swing/approach as prescribed by the Cubs, thus making his results less important than him getting comfortable with the new approach.

Then again, the last time the Cubs tried to change an impatient hitter's approach we wasted 2 years of Castro's career and drove him to attempted murder.

At this point I'm sure the management isn't overreacting to the winter league ball sample size, and neither should anyone else. Getting Javy some extra ABs this year isn't hurting anything.

2 years?

It's hurting my soul.

It may be meaningless because winter league, but the sample size isn't an issue. The sample is more than large enough to decide that his K-rate there is too damn high.

Javier not starting in tonight's game and not yet playing (it's in the 7th).

Also, Theo talks Javy, says the Cubs are sticking with him. --> http://www.csnchicago.com/cubs/theo-epstein-cubs-wont-bail-javier-baez-2015

Unfortunately you can't take much of what Theo says about Javy seriously. He obviously can't say he's disappointed or that the problem is bigger than they thought or they risk destroying his trade value. I just hope he's working on something and some results start to show up.

That article was from September. Much Javy disappointment has happened since then.

Much?

I don't want him to strikeout while working with Mallee either, but at some point we do need to realize this is like 10 random games in Puerto Rico we're talking about here.

You'd be singin a different tune if he was doing well against PR league pitching.

He's there to work on not striking out, yet against inferior pitching he's striking out at an even more alarming rate than ever before, after a full season of raising it as a serious issue.

Theo said in September that the plan was for Javy to open the year in MLB. But their actions since then in acquiring LaStella and sniffing around on Drew indicate a concern that the plan may need a change.

I wonder how much Manny would help him in AAA? I hope Theo&co can talk Manny into another player/coach role.

I also wonder how much Theo&co have invested in Javy, given that he's not their pick. Either way there is nothing to be gained by him flailing away at MLB to start the season.

Yeah, they're probably not all that invested in a power-hitting SS because they didn't pick him; those guys grow on trees.

I'm not the one wondering such a ridiculous thing; given what his potential is, why would it matter whether they picked Baez or not?

For a lot reasons.

So explain. If Baez pans out he's be an insanely valuable player on this team. Hell, at the very least, if he just looks like he could pan out he'd be an insanely valuable trading chip. Why would they not be as invested as possible in trying to get Baez to somehow be valuable?

it's not an all or nothing sort of thing, however, he's not their pick so if he's obdurate about his approach to baseball they MAY be less willing to do things like hire (for all intent) a personal coach for him for another season. Hence my original post.

Of course they want him and every other player attached to the team to do well, but there MAY not be as strong an attachment to a player they didn't draft and who is not able or unwilling to change.

Let's just all hope he figures it out soon enough. It took Sammy a few years to figure it out, once he did he put up those monster years. I don't know if Baez will get that time.

I'd agree with that if you were talking about an incidental prospect, but when you've got someone like Baez, who radically changes the entire nature of your team if he's good (or even through a major trade if he looks like he can be good), then they would be completely in the wrong if they don't do and try anything and everything to help him make it. There's simply no excuse for not taking that approach regardless of who actually drafted Baez.

Nah. I'd be happy he's doing well, but he could be hitting .500 with no K's and I wouldn't project his 2015 season any different than pre-Puerto Rico. Of course I'm not projecting some amazing 2015 in the first place though. He's the youngest player in baseball. In a world where Anthony Rizzo seemed to need nearly 3 MLB seasons of trial and error before (hopefully) becoming the player he was supposed to be, of course it's going to take a crap ton of trial and error for someone like Javy. A lot more than 10 games of winter ball in Puerto Rico which are coming straight off of 3 months with no baseball activity.
